the Danny Jones Podcast Saturday<\/a>.<\/p>\nSalas \u2014 whose job was to launch and monitor nuclear missiles \u201cif given the order\u201d during the Cold War \u2014 was at the controls underground with his partner around 10 p.m. on March 24 of that year when panicked guards called from above about another unidentified craft.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe main guard calls down, says, \u2018Sir, we\u2019ve been seeing some strange lights in the sky, flying directly overhead,\u2019\u201d Salas said.<\/p>\n
Salas said guards insisted the crafts weren\u2019t Soviet airplanes, pointing to bizarre lights as they zipped through the sky before suddenly stopping over the underground ICBMs.<\/p>\n
He initially brushed off the report, thinking it was a prank \u2014 but five minutes later, the guard called back, \u201cscreaming into the phone.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s yelling. He\u2019s babbling. He\u2019s frightened,\u201d Salas recalled.<\/p>\n
After calming down, the guard told Salas his men had their weapons pointed at the crafts hovering above the base\u2019s front gate, emitting a \u201cpulsating reddish light.\u201d<\/p>\n
Salas said the panicked guard asked what to do next, and he told him, \u201cDo whatever you have to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

The guard then said one of his men had just \u201cgot injured\u201d before hanging up.<\/p>\n
Salas said he then went to wake his partner, who was resting, when \u201call of a sudden\u201d a loud horn sounded at the controls, signaling something was wrong with the missiles.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe looked at the board, and sure enough, one of them went from green to red. No ability to launch,\u201d Salas said. \u201cThen, very quickly thereafter, bing bing bing bing, all 10 of them went down. They all went red.\u201d<\/p>\n
They jumped up and ran through their checklist, then realized two launch facilities miles away were showing that \u201csomeone or something\u201d may have breached the fenced missile area.<\/p>\n

Salas said he immediately sent guards out to the missile silos, and when they were about a mile away, they saw the lights hovering above the launch areas.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey were scared to death,\u201d he said. \u201cThey didn\u2019t want to go any further. They were so frightened of these things.\u201d<\/p>\n
Salas said he later heard the injured guard may have hurt his hand while clearing a jam in his rifle or cut it on barbed wire during the encounter.<\/p>\n
He also learned guards claimed to have seen the crafts in the area in the days before the encounter, with movements that could reverse direction, snap into sharp 90-degree turns and fly in total silence.<\/p>\n

The former nuclear missile officer said a Boeing-led investigation could not determine what shut down the warheads, adding the systems were designed to prevent jamming.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey had no idea how this signal could have been injected into each of the missiles,\u201d he said. \u201cThe cabling system that we had was triply shielded against electromagnetic interference from the outside.\u201d<\/p>\n
Salas said he\u2019s convinced that intelligent non-human civilizations visited Earth to prevent a nuclear war.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s another civilization out there that is visiting us and are concerned about us destroying this planet through nuclear war, for many reasons, probably some we don\u2019t even understand,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Air Force investigators forced Salas and his commander to sign strict gag orders following the encounter, warning they could face prison time if they ever spoke about it.<\/p>\n
