Chris Nanos, the sheriff in charge of the Nancy Guthrie investigation<\/a>, is facing a massive recall drive from furious locals, after the Democrat \u201cembarrassed\u201d the county, The Post can reveal.<\/p>\n

Daniel Butierez, a Republican congressional candidate, confirmed that he has already initiated the lengthy recall process.<\/p>\n

He said he has 500 volunteers working to collect signatures to oust Nanos from office.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a bipartisan effort. It\u2019s not like we\u2019re trying to get signatures from one party or the other,\u201d Butierez told The Post from his home in Pima County.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe has been an embarrassment to Tucson and to Pima County with this Nancy Guthrie case,\u201d he said, adding that last week\u2019s allegations that the Sheriff lied under oath about his employment history<\/a> were the final straw.<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone\u2019s pretty disgusted, Democrats and Republicans,\u201d Butierez added.<\/p>\n

Butierez, who is standing against Dem Rep. Adelita Grijalva in Novembe<\/a>r, said he made the decision to begin recall proceedings on Wednesday, after speaking to frustrated rank-and-file Pima County officers.<\/p>\n

He said that Pima County deputies had told him they wanted to launch the recall campaign themselves, but were \u201cafraid of repercussions from Sheriff Nanos.\u201d<\/p>\n

Police in Pima County \u201chad a unanimous vote of no confidence\u201d in Sheriff Nanos on Friday, Butierez added.<\/p>\n

\u201cI decided I\u2019d do it because I\u2019m a congressional candidate, I\u2019m already in the spotlight, and I don\u2019t see Nanos messing with me,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

Since getting his serial number for the recall on Thursday, he now has 120 days to acquire the necessary signatures of 25% of the total votes cast in the last Sheriff\u2019s election in 2024 \u2014 equal to roughly 120,000 signatures.<\/p>\n

But Butierez told The Post he doesn\u2019t think this will be a problem.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m probably going to go for 135,000 signatures,\u201d he said. \u201cRight now, we have almost 500 volunteers who want to get signatures, and five notaries to notarize the pages for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

If he obtains the required signatures, the Pima County Recorder then has 60 days to verify them against voter registration records.<\/p>\n

If successful, Sheriff Nanos will then be notified, at which point he has five days to decide whether to resign or call a Special Recall Election.<\/p>\n

Butierez is running the recall campaign alongside his congressional campaign, as he prepares to face Grijalva this November in a rematch of last September\u2019s special election.<\/p>\n

The Democrat won that race comfortably, securing almost 69% of votes cast, and Butierez admits he faces an uphill task in a historically safe Democratic district.<\/p>\n

Despite that, he believes that the size of his platform on social media \u2014 where he launched his campaign to recall Nanos<\/a> \u2014 will help him pull off an upset come November.<\/p>\n

He recalled a recent conversation with Tucson\u2019s Mayor, Democrat Regina Romero, in which she admitted that she was willing to work with the Republican.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe goes, \u2018You have a huge platform and when you post stuff that the city\u2019s doing wrong, my phone blows up off the hook,’\u201d he recalled.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe said, \u2018Mr. Butierez, I\u2019m willing to work with you and I want you to know that I think you can beat Adelita [Grijalva],’\u201d he said. \u201cShe goes, \u2018All my constituents\u2014Democrats, Independents, Republicans\u2014 they all love you because you are so active in the community.’\u201d<\/p>\n
