Tenants in Bed-Stuy say the locks on the front doors of their Bedford Avenue apartment building have been broken for at least four months \u2013 making the four-story complex accessible to anyone. <\/p>\n
\u201cThis is the worst,\u201d said Ethel Ellerbe, a tenant. \u201cI\u2019m a senior. I\u2019m scared. We can\u2019t have people coming in and out of here. There are small kids in this building, and it\u2019s not safe.\u201d <\/p>\n
\u201cI just want to be safe where I pay rent,\u201d said Morris Tapley, another tenant. \u201c[Building management wants] their rent money. I want to be safe.\u201d <\/p>\n
Tenants said they had seen trespassers sitting in the stairwell, and one unwanted guest even changed clothing in the hallway, then left dirty clothes on the ground. <\/p>\n
\u201cOne day I come, I see somebody right here [in the stairwell],\u201d said Tapley. <\/p>\n
Tenants told News 12 on Tuesday that they reached out to C+C Apartment Management several times. They also filed multiple 311 complaints. <\/p>\n
\u201cNobody\u2019s doing anything to help with this problem, and this is a serious issue,\u201d said Ellerbe. <\/p>\n
A C+C Apartment Management spokesperson released the following statement:
\n\t\u201cThe issue is an access card reader that was found to be inoperable and requires replacement. That repair had been previously scheduled and will be completed today.\u201d <\/p>\n
An HPD spokesperson released the following statement: “Every New Yorker deserves a safe place to call home and HPD\u2019s enforcement team takes that responsibility very seriously. HPD is aware of the issues in this building, and we have issued violations to the property owner. We are addressing the conditions through our Emergency Repair Program which allows us to hire contractors to conduct repair work and bill the property owner. Our immediate priority is ensuring that the tenants have a safe place to live.” <\/p>\n
