\u201cIn retrospect, the whole concept of \u2018defund the police\u2019 made no sense,\u201d de Blasio said as the Democrat sat with a margarita.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt made sense to say, `how can we do better?\u2019 It made sense to say, hey\u2014and by the way, a lot of cops told me this. A lot of police leaders told me this\u2014we\u2019ve got to do a lot more for young people to give them positive alternatives, because that\u2019s good for the police too. That\u2019s good safety too.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hannity responded, \u201cWe\u2019re not disagreeing, right? This is amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n
De Blasio responded, \u201cSo far we\u2019re doing good. We\u2019re doing\u2014so defund was a mistake. And I understand where it came from, but it was a mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n
De Blasio belatedly admitted that Biden\u2019s lax border policy had failed in another segment in the sitdown.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re going to have some common ground. Are you ready?\u201d de Blasio teased Hannity.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m shocked,\u201d Hannity said.<\/p>\n
\u201cOK \u2013 I don\u2019t like what Biden did with the border,\u201d said de Blasio, who served as mayor from 2014 to 2021.<\/p>\n
Hannity asked him, \u201cWhy didn\u2019t you say it then?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause honestly,\u201d de Blasio said, \u201cI didn\u2019t think it was as bad as it was. And then, when I saw it during Biden\u2019s time, that he was able to reverse course in that final year and tighten up the border\u2014no, I mean, that\u2019s the irony.\u201d<\/p>\n
De Blasio has also admitted that the lax border policies from the Biden era had failed. William Farrington<\/p>\n
Hannity fired back that Biden moved too late to tighten the border and didn\u2019t deserve credit for a turnaround. His lax enforcement triggered a migrant crisis that flooded the Big Apple and other municipalities with hundreds of thousands of desperate asylum seekers, Hannity said.<\/p>\n
\u201cSomething changed. Obviously, something changed,\u201d de Blasio said.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo we better drink more of your margarita,\u201d Hannity joked. \u201cThis is going to get tougher.\u201d<\/p>\n
De Blasio then confesses, \u201cWe, as Democrats, rightfully deserve that critique.\u201d<\/p>\n
Right-of-center New Yorkers got a kick out of de Blasio\u2019s about-face.<\/p>\n
\u201cEven a stopped clock is right twice a day,\u201d quipped state Conservative Party chairman Gerard Kassar.<\/p>\n
\u201cUnfortunately, de Blasio didn\u2019t say this when he had the power to make a difference. But I\u2019m glad he\u2019s admitting he\u2019s wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n
Kassar said de Blasio just could have worked by the Roosevelt Hotel in Midtown Manhattan, which was temporarily used as a migrant shelter, to understand how bad the border crisis had gotten.<\/p>\n

During his time as mayor, de Blasio never outright called to \u201cdefund the police\u201d but he supported trimming $1 billion from the police budget in 2020 as protests flared in the wake of the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police.<\/p>\n
The City Council approved an $88.1 billion budget overnight that included shifting roughly $1 billion away from the NYPD.<\/p>\n
At the time the then-mayor defended the cuts and said he was \u201cvery comfortable we struck the right balance.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are reducing the size of our police force by not having the next recruit class,\u201d he said at the time. \u201cWe are reducing our overtime levels. We\u2019re shifting functions away from police to civilian agencies.\u201d<\/p>\n
But by April 2021, he had reversed course and decided to spend $105 million to build a new NYPD precinct in Southeast Queens \u2014 a top priority of black constituents, reversing a decision to eliminate the project the prior year when he was under pressure to cut the police budget.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Is that really you, Bill?
