The Transport Workers Union Local 100 said some MTA buses are out on the road instead of being taken out of service \u2013 which is causing concern for both drivers and riders. <\/p>\n
TWU said there\u2019s a batch of buses in critical need of repair, what they call a \u201credline hold.\u201d <\/p>\n
\u201cWhat [the MTA] has been doing is taking them off redline hold; and they\u2019ve been putting them into service, which is a safety concern,\u201d said John Chiarello, president of TWU Local 100. <\/p>\n
The union claimed the fleet faces a variety of maintenance issues, including worn-out brake pads. <\/p>\n
\u201cBrakes are supposed to be about an inch, and they were being sent out almost to the rivets,\u201d said Chiarello. <\/p>\n
The union said Wednesday it\u2019s unclear how many \u2018redline buses\u2019 are being used right now, but they claimed it\u2019s happening across the city. <\/p>\n
\u201cThey\u2019re making decisions that potentially could be dangerous, and we\u2019re going to make sure that doesn\u2019t happen,\u201d said Chiarello. <\/p>\n
MTA chair and CEO Janno Lieber addressed the situation on Tuesday in front of city council members. He called the claims \u201cnonsense\u201d and denied that defective or broken buses were service. <\/p>\n
