\u201cMy house is not a home anymore,\u201d Lawson said. \u201cYou walk in \u2014 you don\u2019t even feel comfortable having company.\u201d<\/p>\n
With her kitchen unusable, groceries and cookware spill onto the floors of her kitchen and living room. Lawson says she filed multiple maintenance requests with the New York City Housing Authority, but the tickets were marked \u201cclosed\u201d without the work ever being completed.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re putting in orders, we\u2019re making different phone calls. A year later, we\u2019re still here,\u201d she said. \u201cThey brush it off, they put you on the back burner, and it\u2019s just not right.\u201d<\/p>\n
The problems, she says, go beyond mold. Sections of flooring near her bathroom and kitchen have been torn up, leaving exposed materials that raised concerns about asbestos. She says she has since been battling serious health issues that forced her out of work and into doctors\u2019 offices for weeks.<\/p>\n
\u201cShortness of breath, headaches, dizziness \u2014 just constant,\u201d Lawson said. \u201cYou just don\u2019t know where it\u2019s coming from.\u201d<\/p>\n
After being contacted for comment, NYCHA responded within an hour. Maintenance crews arrived at Lawson\u2019s apartment, removed damaged cabinets and began a full cleanup.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe already got the sink removed, the cabinets are done,\u201d Lawson said. \u201cThese are things that could\u2019ve been done a year and a half ago.\u201d<\/p>\n
