President Donald Trump escalated his trade war with\u00a0Canada Saturday, announcing a 10% hike on tariffs after blasting\u00a0Ontario\u2019s\u00a0anti-tariff ad campaign<\/a> as\u00a0\u201cfraudulent\u201d\u00a0and accusing the US neighbor of misusing Ronald\u00a0Reagan\u2019s\u00a0legacy.<\/p>\n

Canada had been\u00a0\u201ccaught,\u00a0red handed\u201d\u00a0using\u00a0\u201cselective audio and video\u201d\u00a0of\u00a0Reagan\u2019s\u00a01987 radio address in an ad opposing tariffs, the president wrote on Truth Social, claiming the move\u00a0was designed\u00a0to sway an upcoming US Supreme Court case on his authority to issue the levies.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause of their serious misrepresentation of the facts, and hostile act, I am increasing the Tariff on Canada by 10% over and above what they are paying now,\u201d\u00a0Trump wrote on Truth Social.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s\u00a0latest salvo came hours after Ontario Premier Doug Ford agreed to pause the\u00a0province\u2019s\u00a0$75 million anti-tariff campaign on Monday, following talks with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.<\/p>\n

The ads\u00a0\u2014\u00a0which use clips of Reagan warning that tariffs\u00a0\u201churt\u201d\u00a0Americans\u00a0\u2014\u00a0triggered Trump\u00a0on Thursday\u00a0to terminate trade negotiations with Canada.<\/p>\n

The Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute said the Ontario government\u00a0\u201cdid not seek nor receive permission\u201d\u00a0to use\u00a0Reagan\u2019s\u00a0remarks and was\u00a0\u201creviewing its legal options.\u201d<\/p>\n

The foundation accused the province of misrepresenting\u00a0Reagan\u2019s\u00a0speech, bolstering\u00a0Trump\u2019s\u00a0claims that the ad was deceptive.<\/p>\n

The Ontario ad features\u00a0Reagan\u2019s\u00a01987 comments that tariffs\u00a0\u201churt\u201d\u00a0Americans \u2014\u00a0remarks the province said were used to illustrate<\/a>\u00a0how protectionist policies raise prices and strain trade relationships.<\/p>\n

The ad contains clips of Reagan claiming that tariffs hurt Americans. x\/fordnation<\/p>\n

The one-minute spot has aired\u00a0on major US networks including Fox, NBC\u00a0and\u00a0CNBC<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 and was slated for national placement during the World Series broadcast.<\/p>\n

Ford defended the campaign\u00a0as an effort to\u00a0\u201cinitiate a conversation\u201d<\/a>\u00a0about the economic fallout of tariffs, saying it had already reached\u00a0\u201cUS audiences at the highest levels.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a post on X, he said Ontario would continue airing the ad through the first two World Series games\u00a0\u2014\u00a0featuring the Toronto Blue Jays and Los Angeles Dodgers\u00a0\u2014\u00a0before the pause takes effect.<\/p>\n

Trump, speaking to reporters before leaving for Asia, dismissed\u00a0Ford\u2019s\u00a0defense and accused Canada of trying to\u00a0\u201cillegally influence the United States Supreme Court.\u201d<\/p>\n

He\u00a0called\u00a0the ad\u00a0\u201creally dishonest\u201d\u00a0and\u00a0\u201ccrooked.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

Carney, who replaced Justin Trudeau as prime minister earlier this year, has been seeking to restart trade talks after\u00a0Trump imposed sweeping 35% tariffs on Canadian goods<\/a>, including steel, aluminum\u00a0and\u00a0cars.<\/p>\n

The new increase announced on Saturday widens that penalty further, raising fears of another full-blown trade war between the two allies.<\/p>\n
