PROSPECT HEIGHTS \u2014\u00a0The fragrances of fresh lilies and incense merged\u00a0on\u00a0March 19 for\u00a0a 7 p.m. Mass for the\u00a0solemnity of St. Joseph at the parish that carries his name\u00a0in the Diocese of Brooklyn\u00a0\u2014\u00a0the Co-Cathedral of St. Joseph.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Mass, celebrated by Msgr. Joseph Grimaldi, vicar general for the\u00a0diocese,\u00a0was held on the feast\u00a0of St. Joseph.\u00a0Many\u00a0members\u00a0of the congregation wore white and carried lilies, which are associated with the saint.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Msgr. Sean Ogle,\u00a0the homilist,\u00a0shared\u00a0before Mass the story of how\u00a0Joseph was selected to be Mary\u2019s husband after his staff \u201cblossomed\u201d with\u00a0lilies.\u00a0It was\u00a0a\u00a0sign\u00a0that God chose him\u00a0for\u00a0the immense\u00a0responsibility\u00a0of being the provider and protector\u00a0of the Holy Family,\u00a0he explained.\u00a0And although no sentences in scripture\u00a0are\u00a0attributed to the foster father of Jesus, his actions are well recorded.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cJoseph was a man of action,\u201d\u00a0said\u00a0Msgr. Ogle, vicar for clergy and consecrated life in the Diocese of Brooklyn. \u201cAnd his biblical silence makes sure that we see how decisive his actions were.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd decisive action does not come from a weak and timid man, but rather from the strong, silent type of man\u00a0that humble and obedient faith in God will produce.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Linda Ferrette, who belongs to St. Teresa of Avila\u00a0Church in Prospect Heights, said she attended the Mass because of her devotion to St. Joseph that began as a child growing up in\u00a0Trinidad and Tobago.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cHe is the father of everyone,\u201d she said of St. Joseph, \u201cso we always pray to him and ask him to guide all families. Every day I pray for peace in this world, especially for the kids who are growing up now very rough, tough,\u00a0and with less knowledge about religion.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Rene Garcia, a member of the co-cathedral\u2019s\u00a0parish, came to the Mass with his wife and three children, ages 17, 14, and 6. He said St. Joseph inspires him.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe learn how he was a father to Jesus, and now I try to do the same thing,\u201d Garcia said. \u201cI try to do my best to take care of my family.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Also, before the Mass, Msgr. Grimaldi\u00a0recounted\u00a0how\u00a0both his grandfathers were named Joseph, so,\u00a0in keeping with\u00a0the\u00a0Italian tradition of naming a firstborn son\u00a0after a grandfather,\u00a0it was\u00a0a\u00a0foregone\u00a0conclusion that he too would have the same name as the saint.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI was covered by both,\u201d he said\u00a0of\u00a0his grandfathers. \u201cSo, there was no question about it \u2014 I was Joseph.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

But, while growing up in Immaculate Conception Parish in Astoria, Msgr. Grimaldi developed a unique devotion to\u00a0the saint.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI always saw St. Joseph as a true father figure,\u201d he said. \u201cI understood and prayed to him as a man of obedience and trust.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

St.\u00a0Joseph\u00a0was always a\u00a0man of simplicity and humility, but in sainthood, he\u00a0holds the title of \u201cpatron of the Universal Church\u201d\u00a0and\u00a0is\u00a0a phenomenal intercessor, Msgr. Grimaldi said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
