BROOKLYN, NY \u2014 A correction officer at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn was indicted for allegedly sexually abusing an inmate and lying to federal agents about the incidents, prosecutors said.<\/p>\n
James Johnson, 36, of Manhattan, was arrested Wednesday and charged with sexual abuse, sexual abuse of a ward and making false statements, according to the U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office for the Eastern District of New York.<\/p>\n
Prosecutors allege Johnson abused an inmate identified as \u201cJohn Doe\u201d during at least two incidents in May 2025 while assigned to guard him. According to court documents, Johnson ordered the inmate out of his assigned unit and took him to other locations inside the facility, where the abuse occurred.<\/p>\n
DNA evidence recovered from the inmate\u2019s prison jumpsuit linked Johnson to the alleged assaults, prosecutors said.<\/p>\n
Authorities also allege Johnson attempted to conceal his actions by lying to federal agents during an interview, claiming he had never engaged in a sexual act with an inmate.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs alleged, Johnson leveraged his position as a correctional officer to take advantage of a man he was supposed to be protecting in his capacity as a prison guard and used his access to gratify his own sexual desires,\u201d U.S. Attorney Nocella said.<\/p>\n
FBI Assistant Director in Charge Barnacle said, \u201cThe alleged sexual abuse of an inmate by a federal correctional officer is a grave betrayal of public trust and will not be tolerated.\u201d<\/p>\n
