{"id":170315,"date":"2026-03-21T09:16:27","date_gmt":"2026-03-21T09:16:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/170315\/"},"modified":"2026-03-21T09:16:27","modified_gmt":"2026-03-21T09:16:27","slug":"judge-sides-with-new-york-times-in-challenge-to-policy-limiting-reporters-access-to-pentagon-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/170315\/","title":{"rendered":"Judge sides with New York Times in challenge to policy limiting reporters\u2019 access to Pentagon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text | article-text\">WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 A federal judge <a href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.dcd.287334\/gov.uscourts.dcd.287334.35.0_1.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">agreed Friday<\/a> to block the Trump administration from enforcing a policy limiting news reporters\u2019 access to the Pentagon, ruling that key portions of the new rules are unlawful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">U.S. District Judge Paul Friedman in Washington, D.C., sided with The New York Times and ruled that the Pentagon policy illegally restricts the press credentials of reporters who <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/pentagon-press-access-hegseth-trump-restrictions-5d9c2a63e4e03b91fc1546bb09ffbf12\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">walked out<\/a> of the building rather than agree to the new rules.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The New York Times <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/pentagon-press-access-new-york-times-lawsuit-4902b47079139202a906921e6c685a80\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sued the Pentagon<\/a> and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in December, claiming the credentialing policy violates the journalists\u2019 constitutional rights to free speech and due process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The current Pentagon press corps comprises mostly conservative outlets that agreed to the policy. Reporters from outlets that refused to consent to the new rules, including those from The Associated Press, have <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/pentagon-press-access-media-hegseth-defense-ca0ef1b86a9ed9f02b84a3ceb11ff29b\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">continued reporting<\/a> on the military.<\/p>\n<p class=\"copyright |\">Copyright 2026 The Associated Press.
