Move over, \u201cYellowstone\u201d\u2014real-life New Yorkers are taking notes on a new drama transporting them out to the mountains of\u00a0Montana.<\/p>\n
Taylor Sheridan\u2019s latest show, \u201cThe Madison,\u201d starring\u00a0Michelle Pfeiffer\u00a0and\u00a0Kurt Russell, follows a\u00a0New York\u00a0family relocating to Montana.<\/p>\n
The show is set primarily in\u00a0the Madison River Valley, near\u00a0Ennis, MT, a small town with a population of 615.<\/p>\n
The median listing price in Ennis is $742,000, which is 49.9% higher than it was pre-pandemic in February 2020.<\/p>\n
Over the last six years, Montana has experienced the steepest overall growth in listing prices of any state in the U.S., according to\u00a0Hannah Jones, senior economic research analyst at\u00a0Realtor.com.<\/p>\n
Chase Heiland, a Montana real estate broker with\u00a0Keller Williams, says \u201cThe Madison\u201d could be a case of art imitating life\u2014because he\u2019s seen a lot of\u00a0interest in the area\u00a0from New Yorkers.<\/p>\n
\u201cI had\u00a0some clients from\u00a0New York\u00a0who bought land in Ennis with plans to build their retirement home there someday,\u201d Heiland tells Realtor.com.<\/p>\n
He adds that New Yorkers are drawn to the region for its wide-open spaces, ranch lifestyle, and recreational activities such as skiing and fly-fishing.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have to place a good amount of value on outdoor recreation for a full-time move to make sense\u2014otherwise, you\u2019re pretty cooped up in the winter,\u201d he says. \u201cIn the colder months, many New Yorkers enjoy skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, ice fishing, and hunting.\u201d<\/p>\n
Heiland says his East Coast clients love Ennis\u2019 small-town charm. \u201cIt\u2019s what you would think of as an old cowboy rancher town,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n
Heiland has had New York clients interested in primary residences, vacation homes, ranches, and land to build on in both Ennis and nearby\u00a0Three Forks, where parts of \u201cThe Madison\u201d were also filmed.<\/p>\n

Heiland says Three Forks\u2014about 30 minutes west of\u00a0Bozeman\u2014is where the\u00a0Missouri\u00a0River begins, formed by the confluence of the Madison, Gallatin, and Jefferson rivers.<\/p>\n
The population of the town is 2,034, and the median listing price is $596,225, 50% higher than it was in February 2020.<\/p>\n
This nature lover\u2019s paradise features campgrounds, scenic hiking trails, and ample opportunities for fishing and floating.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Madison\u201d was partially shot in Bozeman, where the median listing price is currently $754,000\u2014$250,250 higher than it was in February 2020.<\/p>\n
\u201cBozeman is what\u2019s considered the \u2018Big City\u2019 in Montana,\u201d says Heiland. \u201cIt has more art, culture, and restaurants than the smaller towns, but is much slower than New York City.\u201d<\/p>\n
According to Jones, interest from New York City viewers exploring Montana listings on Realtor.com reached its peak in 2021, making up 5.1% of total viewership.<\/p>\n

Another\u00a0Taylor Sheridan\u00a0juggernaut, \u201cYellowstone,\u201d attracted a lot of out-of-state buyers to Montana in the last few years, Heiland explains. \u201cI do recall getting calls from people who said, \u2018I saw Yellowstone, I want to move there,\u2019 and when I\u2019d ask if they\u2019d ever been here before, they\u2019d say no,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n
