A first-generation Dominican American high school student is making a name for herself in the Bronx during Women\u2019s History Month.<\/p>\n
Zoe Trinidad, a 10th grader at the Young Women\u2019s Leadership School, maintains straight A\u2019s while serving as vice president of her school\u2019s student union, captain of the volleyball team and manager of the basketball team.<\/p>\n
Her leadership extends beyond campus. Trinidad is also a member of the Bronx Borough President\u2019s Youth Council, where she works with other students to develop ideas addressing issues affecting young people, including access to basic school supplies.<\/p>\n
\u201cExpanding what schools possibly need, whether that\u2019s soap or tissue \u2014 some of the basic necessities are sometimes missing,\u201d Trinidad said.<\/p>\n
Balancing her responsibilities is not easy, she said, requiring discipline and sacrifice.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s not easy. You have to make your sacrifice,\u201d Trinidad said.<\/p>\n
Teachers say her dedication stands out.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t know if she even has a free period. Any free moment that she has, she\u2019s either studying or helping out with a club,\u201d said Stephanie Mota, a teacher at the school. \u201cAs soon as she gets home, she\u2019s still really dedicated.\u201d<\/p>\n
Trinidad credits her drive to the strong women in her life, including her mother and two older sisters, who inspired her to pursue an all-girls education focused on leadership.<\/p>\n
\u201cBeing surrounded by smart, intelligent women \u2026 it\u2019s kind of like a blessing,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
As she helps prepare for a women\u2019s empowerment celebration at her school, Trinidad said her interest in women\u2019s studies continues to grow. She hopes to become a clinical psychologist, with a focus on mental health for women.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think mental health, especially for women, is so important,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
