Donald Trump<\/a> besieged Queen Elizabeth II<\/a> with a barrage of questions about her family and regard for previous presidents, according to a new book.<\/p>\n

The Queen and Her Presidents: The Hidden Hand That Shaped History, by Susan Page, details the Queen\u2019s relationships with a steady stream of US presidents, from her first encounter with president Harry Truman in 1951, when she was Princess Elizabeth, to the final state dinner of her seven-decade reign, held in 2019 in honour of President Trump.<\/p>\n

During that state visit<\/a> \u2013 the first of two Mr Trump has made, but the last during the Queen\u2019s life \u2013 he reportedly probed her majesty about her grandson Prince Harry\u2019s relationship with his wife, Meghan, a few months after the birth of the couple\u2019s first child. At the time, the British press was routinely reporting<\/a> that a feud had developed between Prince Harry and Prince William, and their spouses.<\/p>\n

Extracts, published by USA Today<\/a>, from the book purportedly reveal Mr Trump\u2019s version of how the late Queen handled his questions.<\/p>\n

\u201cI asked her about it constantly,\u201d Mr Trump said, according to the book. \u201cI\u2019d say, \u2018Come on, tell me [what you really think]\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

She replied: \u201cNo, no. It\u2019s very nice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite the Queen\u2019s propriety, the president was apparently unconvinced.<\/p>\n

\u201cI really think it hurt her,\u201d he said, in reference to the fallout reportedly occurring in the royal family. \u201cI just don\u2019t think they treated her with the respect that she should have, frankly.\u201d<\/p>\n

During the same state visit, Mr Trump also attempted, unsuccessfully, to draw the Queen to appraise the other 14 US presidents she had met \u2013 12 of them while they were in office \u2013 and to pick a favourite, the book reveals.<\/p>\n

\u201cI said, \u2018So could I ask you who was your favourite president?\u2019\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The book recounts that she replied: \u201cWhy? They were all so good.\u201d<\/p>\n

Of the encounter, Mr Trump reportedly said: \u201cI couldn\u2019t get her to say a bad thing about anybody.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite refusing to choose, according to Page, Mr Trump had a theory that the Queen\u2019s all-time favourite was none other than himself.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe just got along,\u201d he said. The then-US ambassador Woody Johnson agreed, writes Page. \u201cThe president has a very keen sense of things like that,\u201d the owner of the New York Jets football team added.<\/p>\n

Despite the recent strain on the \u2018special relationship\u2019, the White House is expected to announce the King\u2019s state visit to the US this week, according to a report (PA Archive)<\/p>\n

According to the book, some former presidents and first ladies were sceptical about Mr Trump\u2019s presumption.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s hysterical,\u201d Jill Biden said, while Joe Biden shook his head, the book describes. \u201cOh, that fits his character, for sure.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hillary Clinton reportedly responded, \u201cWhy am I not surprised by that?\u201d, adding: \u201cI don\u2019t think there is any evidence to believe that could possibly be true.\u201d<\/p>\n

The publication of the book comes as the \u201cspecial relationship\u201d between the UK and the US has been tested<\/a> by Mr Trump\u2019s frustrations with UK prime minister Sir Keir Starmer\u2019s response to the war in Iran.<\/p>\n

Last week, a senior UK lawmaker joined the mounting calls<\/a> for King Charles\u2019s visit to the US to be delayed <\/a>amid worsening relations between the two nations.<\/p>\n

King Charles has been credited with playing a vital role in easing relations between the UK and the US, with the president\u2019s second state visit<\/a> last year seen as a broad success.<\/p>\n

Despite the tensions, the White House is expected to announce the state visit to America this week, according to a report. <\/a><\/p>\n
