The 82nd Airborne troops could be given a number of tasks \u2014 from reinforcing US positions, protecting American personnel and assets or serving as a deterrent against further Iranian escalation<\/a>.<\/p>\n

President Trump has not ruled out putting US boots on the ground in the region \u2014 either in Iran or on the strategically vital Kharg Island \u2014 but said Thursday he had no immediate plans to do so. However, he also suggested he wouldn\u2019t preview any such military moves in the press.<\/p>\n

In a Friday interview with Fox News host Martha MacCallum, Trump stated that he\u00a0needed \u201cnumbers\u201d\u00a0<\/a>to reopen the Strait \u2014 after railing hours earlier about\u00a0\u201ccowards\u201d in the NATO alliance<\/a>\u00a0unwilling to help militarily.<\/p>\n
