Several New York State landmarks will be lit in purple on Thursday evening, March 26.

It’s part of International Purple Day, which honors epilepsy awareness.

The New York State Department of Health says epilepsy is a brain disorder that results in repeated seizures.

About three million people in the United States live with epilepsy, including an estimated 215,000 people in New York State, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The health department says nearly 9,000 New Yorkers are diagnosed each year.

“More than half the time, the cause of epilepsy is unknown,” the Department of Health said in a statement. “When the cause can be determined, it is most often due to head injury, infections, a tumor in the brain, a stroke, other neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, or genetic factors.”
