NEW YORK (PIX11) \u2014 Authorities have taken more than 1,000 guns off New York City streets this year, including ghost guns, according to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s an incredible milestone. But when we talk about gun violence we are talking about more than just numbers. We are talking about people, about lives saved, about families kept whole, and senseless tragedy avoided,\u201d Tisch said the 73rd Precinct in Brownsville on Thursday.<\/p>\n

The neighborhoods typically plagued by gun violence saw the greatest impact of the decline.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is where we are seeing the most dramatic results,\u201d Tisch said.<\/p>\n The commissioner credits precision policing for making the neighborhoods safer. The department has sent an unprecedented number of officers to the troubled areas to combat gun violence.<\/p>\n \u201cThose officers are making gun arrests,\u201d Tisch said.<\/p>\n This year, citywide shooting incidents (121) and shooting victims (142) are on par with last year, according to NYPD data.<\/p>\n \u201cDo not bring illegal guns to New York or you will have to deal with two Tisches,\u201d Attorney General Tish James said.<\/p>\n Mira Wassef is an award-winning reporter who has covered news and sports in the NYC area for more than a decade.
