WASHINGTON \u2014 House Republicans rejected a\u00a0Senate-passed funding bill<\/a>\u00a0to reopen most of the Department of Homeland Security Friday, prolonging a six-week shutdown as they sought to fully reopen the agency.\u00a0<\/p>\n

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) told reporters his chamber would move \u201cas soon as possible\u201d on a stopgap measure funding DHS for 60 days after federal immigration enforcement got \u201czero\u201d dollars in the Senate version of the bill.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is unconscionable to me that the Democrats would force some sort of negotiation at three o\u2019clock in the morning and try to foist this upon the American people and then get on their jets and go home for their holiday \u2014 and pretend and think that we\u2019re going to go along with that,\u201d Johnson fumed.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt can\u2019t be the case that every Senate Republican read this bill,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Johnson said President Trump had expressed support for the move, and is in the process of separately implementing an executive order to pay Transportation Security Administration agents in full to end weeks chaos at America\u2019s airports.<\/p>\n

Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) told The Post earlier Friday that the Senate compromise was \u201cnot going to pass as it is,\u201d adding that it was\u00a0\u201cabsolutely offensive\u201d to his constituents in Border Patrol and other agencies who have missed paychecks.<\/p>\n

Another\u00a0House GOPer griped that the Senate \u201cshouldn\u2019t have left town\u201d\u00a0for its two-week Easter and Passover break\u00a0before the bill reached President Trump\u2019s desk.<\/p>\n

The Senate-passed measure would\u00a0fully fund\u00a0DHS agencies except Immigration and Customs Enforcement\u00a0and Border Patrol.<\/p>\n

Republicans already secured\u00a0billions in\u00a0funding for those agencies in President Trump\u2019s One Big Beautiful Bill\u00a0this past\u00a0July, though several are hopeful that additional spending can be tucked into a second reconciliation bill in the near future.<\/p>\n

Senate Democrats have held up the funding<\/a>\u00a0for 42 days in protest of\u00a0the\u00a0ICE and\u00a0Customs and Border Protection-involved fatal shootings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minnesota earlier this year.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey ended up getting no reforms but, you know, we\u2019re going to have to fight some of those battles another day,\u201d Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) said of his Democratic colleagues.<\/p>\n

More than 480 Transportation Security Officers (TSOs) have quit\u00a0<\/a>and as many as 50%\u00a0of staff at individual airports\u00a0were calling out of work as the shutdown dragged on, a top TSA official\u00a0testified to Congress<\/a>\u00a0Wednesday.\u00a0The lack of pay had some TSA agents\u00a0selling their blood and sleeping in their cars to make ends meet.<\/p>\n

Passengers have been suffering the highest wait times in the agency\u2019s 25-year\u00a0history, the official also told lawmakers, and if the funding fight continued, smaller airports were under threat of having to close down.<\/p>\n
