Hello who?<\/p>\n

A new sign declaring \u201cHello, Gorgeous!\u201d on the Brooklyn Bridge is welcoming folks to Manhattan \u2014 but nobody seems to get the reference.<\/p>\n

The slogan is a shout-out to Barbra Streisand\u2019s<\/a> first line in the 1968 movie \u201cFunny Girl,\u201d in which she plays a rising Broadway star, officials said.<\/p>\n

Call it a sign of the times \u2014 but most folks on the bridge Friday had no clue it was a tribute to Babs.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat the f\u2013k is \u2018Funny Girl?’\u201d said one native New Yorker in his 40s at the bridge, before hustling away.<\/p>\n

A visiting teacher, in her 50s added, \u201cWhat was that, from the sixties?\u201d<\/p>\n

Others said they thought the tagline was \u201ccute\u201d and \u201con theme for Manhattan\u201d even though they hadn\u2019t heard of the film.<\/p>\n

When asked if she knew what film the line was from, 24-year-old New Jersey resident Mariana replied, \u201cWhy do I want to say, like, \u2018Breakfast at Tiffany\u2019s?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The green and blue sign, installed last month by the Department of Transportation, is the brainchild of Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you cross into Manhattan, there\u2019s only one proper entrance line: \u2018Hello, gorgeous.\u2019 Barbra said it first, and frankly, she could\u2019ve been talking about this borough,\u201d he said in a press release<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThese signs are a wink to our theatrical soul, our cultural legacy, and our well-earned confidence. After all, what better way to enter Manhattan than with a compliment?\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition the the greeting, \u201cWelcome to Manhattan\u201d and \u201cHello, Goregous!\u201d the signs include the names of Mayor Mamdani and Hoylman-Sigal. <\/p>\n

They are not the only city signs with a cheeky slogan, as they join such signs as ones that read \u201cLeaving Brooklyn, Fuhgeddaboudit.\u201d<\/p>\n

In her beloved role as comedienne Fanny Brice, Streisand catches a glimpse of herself in a mirror and purrs, \u201cHello, gorgeous\u201d with sadness in her eyes.<\/p>\n

When she won an Oscar for\u00a0the performance, she famously looked at the gold-plated award and repeated the line with more enthusiasm.<\/p>\n
