The mother of the 16-year-old boy charged with manslaughter in the shooting death <\/a>of a Brooklyn high school football player this week is an NYPD officer, law enforcement sources said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The arrested teen \u2013 whose name has not been released because he is a minor \u2013 was allegedly passing around a handgun inside NYCHA\u2019s Sheepshead Bay Houses Monday evening when a round went off, hitting Ka\u2019Mardre Coleman<\/a>, also 16, in the chest, according to cops and prosecutors.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The tragedy unfolded when the teen allegedly took a handgun out of his backpack and passed it around to three others in the room, including Ka\u2019Mardre, according to a complaint filed in Brooklyn Criminal Court.<\/p>\n

Ka\u2019Mardre Coleman, 16, was fatally struck in the chest when another 16-year-old passed around a handgun and a round went off, prosecutors said. William C Lopez\/New York Post<\/p>\n

He then allegedly took the gun back and removed a loaded magazine from the firearm.\u00a0<\/p>\n

A round then discharged from the weapon \u2014 mortally wounding Ka\u2019Mardre, the court doc said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The shot teen was rushed to a local hospital, but he could not be saved.<\/p>\n

Law enforcement sources have since revealed that the boy\u2019s mother is an NYPD cop serving the 5th Precinct, which covers Chinatown, Little Italy and the Bowery.<\/p>\n

Ka\u2019Mardre\u2019s was a co-captain of the junior varsity football team at Sheepshead Bay High School. William C Lopez\/New York Post<\/p>\n

The boy\u2019s lawyer, Kenneth Montgomery, cited his client\u2019s mother\u2019s NYPD job while arguing for lower bail during his arraignment \u2013 where prosecutors had pushed for $250,000 bail, The New York Times reported<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Montgomery \u2013 who did not immediately return a call from The Post \u2013 had also argued that his client did not have a previous criminal record, according to The Times.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The judge, pointing out that \u201cthere was no intentional act here,\u201d ultimately set bail at $60,000 cash or $125,000 bond, according to prosecutors and the report.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ka\u2019Mardre would have turned 17 on Friday. William C Lopez\/New York Post<\/p>\n

The teen\u2019s family posted his bail Thursday, the paper reported.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But\u00a0 Ka\u2019Mardre\u2019s older sister, 21-year-old Julani Bannister, previously told The Post she wants to know more about what happened to her brother, who would have turned 17 on Friday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s my heart. That was my baby,\u201d Bannister added. \u201cHe was a bright light. He was my everything. It was us. He was my right hip. I always tried to protect him. I want to tell him \u2018I\u2019m sorry. I\u2019m sorry\u2019.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

One of Ka\u2019Mardre\u2019s classmates at Sheepshead Bay High School remembered Ka\u2019Mardre as a fun-loving co-captain of his school\u2019s junior varsity football team.<\/p>\n

His dad, Codwell Coleman, told The Post by phone that his son was a \u201cgreat athlete\u201d who worked hard to get stellar grades.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was all about life. He was well-mannered, good in school, a great athlete. He used to struggle in school, and I said he couldn\u2019t play sports until he got his academics to number one,\u201d the heartbroken father said. \u201cHis academics now match his sports. He put in the hard work. He\u2019s been on a journey.
