{"id":179036,"date":"2026-03-29T19:05:09","date_gmt":"2026-03-29T19:05:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/179036\/"},"modified":"2026-03-29T19:05:09","modified_gmt":"2026-03-29T19:05:09","slug":"1st-palm-sunday-mass-under-new-york-archbishop-ronald-hicks-draws-thousands-to-st-patricks-cathedral","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/179036\/","title":{"rendered":"1st Palm Sunday Mass under New York Archbishop Ronald Hicks draws thousands to St. Patrick&#8217;s Cathedral"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thousands of Catholics went to <a href=\"https:\/\/saintpatrickscathedral.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">St. Patrick&#8217;s Cathedral<\/a> in New York City to celebrate Palm Sunday Mass and mark the start of 2026 Holy Week, the first under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/ash-wednesday-st-patricks-cathedral-nyc\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Archbishop Ronald Hicks<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Palms inside the Midtown Manhattan cathedral recall the story or Jesus entering Jerusalem, where crowds laid palm branches before him.<\/p>\n<p>For Hicks, who was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/ronald-hicks-archbishop-new-york-installation\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">installed in February<\/a> following Cardinal Timothy Dolan&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/ronald-hicks-new-york-cardinal-timothy-dolan-successor\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">retirement<\/a>, celebrating his first Palm Sunday on Fifth Avenue served as a reminder of the transformation Holy Week stands for.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What happened, these mysteries we celebrate, gives us the path to salvation, eternal life. It&#8217;s the greatest gift ever,&#8221; Hicks said. &#8220;We celebrated well today, with joy, with prayer, with a great sense of faith.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>      <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/st-pats-palm-sunday-mass-raw-nc-hi-res-still-00-03-1228.jpg#.jpeg\" alt=\"st-pats-palm-sunday-mass-raw-nc-hi-res-still-00-03-1228.jpg \" height=\"349\" width=\"620\" class=\" lazyload\"  loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>                  Palms signify the story of Jesus entering Jerusalem.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>                CBS News New York<\/p>\n<p>Hicks said everyone, not just Christians, could find guidance in the message Jesus carried into Jerusalem when asked about the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/church-holy-sepulchre-jerusalem-cardinal-pizzaballa-israel-catholic\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">turmoil<\/a>\u00a0at home and abroad.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Jesus, who stood for peace. Jesus, who showed the path to love. Jesus, who showed us how to love our brothers and sisters,&#8221; the archbishop said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Parishioners said that message of peace resonates deeply this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was a nice way to just kind of reflect and regain hope during a really difficult time, personally, but then it&#8217;s exacerbated by everything that&#8217;s going on politically, as well.
