{"id":179492,"date":"2026-03-30T10:24:34","date_gmt":"2026-03-30T10:24:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/179492\/"},"modified":"2026-03-30T10:24:34","modified_gmt":"2026-03-30T10:24:34","slug":"electric-blue-blooms-signal-springs-arrival-at-bronx-garden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/179492\/","title":{"rendered":"Electric blue blooms signal spring\u2019s arrival at Bronx garden"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A burst of electric blue is signaling the arrival of spring at Wave Hill, where thousands of delicate blossoms are carpeting the grounds in one of the city\u2019s earliest seasonal displays.<\/p>\n<p>The 28-acre public garden and cultural center in the Riverdale section of the Bronx is seeing a \u201csuper bloom\u201d of scilla sardensis \u2014 commonly known as Glory-of-the-Snow \u2014 a hardy bulb native to the mountains of western Turkey.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are Scilla sardensis, the common name is Glory-of-the-Snow. They are native to the mountains of Western Turkey but are really comfortable growing in almost any condition, as you can see. They are, for us, the real harbingers of spring. We know that once we start to see this electric blue color, the season is starting for us,\u201d said Cathy Deutsch, director of horticulture at Wave Hill.<\/p>\n<p>What You Need To Know<\/p>\n<p>Wave Hill in the Bronx is seeing a \u201csuper bloom\u201d of Glory-of-the-Snow flowers<br \/>\n<br \/>The early spring bulbs are known for their vivid electric blue color<br \/>\n<br \/>The Alpine House at Wave Hill is also showcasing early seasonal blooms<br \/>\n<br \/>The garden, once private estates, has been open to the public since the 1960s<\/p>\n<p>Set along the Hudson River with views of the water and the New Jersey Palisades, Wave Hill\u2019s grounds transform each year as the early spring bulbs return with little intervention.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t mow under here, so once it gets done blooming, the foliage persists green for a while, and then as it dies back, it\u2019s feeding the bulb for next year\u2019s flower,\u201d Deutsch said.<\/p>\n<p>The vivid display is just one part of the seasonal transition underway at the garden.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/electric_blooms_wave_hill_IMG_8782.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"hashed-image\" img-data-alignment=\"center\" img-data-width=\"percent-hundred\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Inside Wave Hill\u2019s Alpine House, which is designed to mimic mountaintop conditions, visitors can find an array of carefully protected plants emerging after the winter months.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe get this flourish of early spring blooms, which really is unparalleled in the city,\u201d Deutsch said.<\/p>\n<p>Though Wave Hill offers year-round attractions, the prolific early spring blooms are a signal of things to come.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBetween the Alpine House and our Glory-of-the-Snow and our early crocus, there\u2019s really a lot of dynamic color happening right now,\u201d Deutsch said.<\/p>\n<p>The property, once home to a series of private estates, opened as a public garden in the mid-1960s.
