{"id":179610,"date":"2026-03-30T13:10:49","date_gmt":"2026-03-30T13:10:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/179610\/"},"modified":"2026-03-30T13:10:49","modified_gmt":"2026-03-30T13:10:49","slug":"queens-woman-fatally-struck-by-private-garbage-truck-driver-while-crossing-street-cops","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/179610\/","title":{"rendered":"Queens woman fatally struck by private garbage truck driver while crossing street: cops"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t<img width=\"1200\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Screenshot-2026-03-30-at-8.39.47-AM.jpg\" class=\"crop-center wp-post-image\" alt=\"garbage truck in Queens at scene where woman was fatally struck\" decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"high\"   title=\"Queens woman fatally struck by private garbage truck driver while crossing street: cops 1\"\/>\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Police in Queens are investigating how a private garbage truck driver struck and killed a young woman attempting to cross a street late on Sunday night.<\/p>\n<p>Screenshot via Citizen<\/p>\n<p>Police in <a href=\"https:\/\/amny.com\/queens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Queens<\/a> are investigating how a private garbage truck driver struck and killed a young woman attempting to cross a street late on Sunday night.\n<\/p>\n<p>Law enforcement sources said the deadly collision occurred at about 11:55 p.m. on March 29 at the corner of Roosevelt Avenue and 62nd Street in Woodside.\n<\/p>\n<p>Based on a preliminary investigation, police determined that the victim, identified as Nishath Jannath, 19, of 55th Street in Queens, was fatally struck as she crossed 62nd Street in the northbound crosswalk.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Police said Jannath was hit by a 38-year-old woman behind the wheel of a private garbage truck, belonging to Royal Waste Services in Jamaica, while attempting to turn onto northbound 62nd Street from eastbound Roosevelt Avenue.<\/p>\n<p>After striking the woman, cops said, the garbage truck driver stopped the vehicle and remained at the scene for police and EMS to arrive.\n<\/p>\n<p>Officers from the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nypd108pct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">108th Precinct<\/a> and EMS rushed to the scene. Jannath was pronounced dead at the scene from her injuries.\n<\/p>\n<p>Police said the garbage truck driver suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene by EMS; police sources could not specify how she was hurt.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>So far, no charges have been filed against the driver. The case has been presented to the NYPD Collision Investigation Squad for further examination.\n<\/p>\n<p>Since 2021, the intersection of Roosevelt Avenue and 62nd Street has seen three crashes, though none of them were fatal, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/crashmapper.org\/#\/?cfat=true&amp;cinj=true&amp;endDate=2026-02&amp;geo=citywide&amp;identifier=&amp;lat=40.74459088410249&amp;lng=-73.88853907585144&amp;lngLats=%255B%255D&amp;mfat=true&amp;minj=true&amp;noInjFat=false&amp;pfat=true&amp;pinj=true&amp;startDate=2021-02&amp;vbicycle=true&amp;vbusvan=true&amp;vcar=true&amp;vmotorcycle=true&amp;vother=true&amp;vscooter=true&amp;vsuv=true&amp;vtruck=true&amp;zoom=16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">NYC Crash Mapper<\/a>.
