STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. \u2014 While rain may fall on New York City streets Saturday, that precipitation comes ahead of the concerning coastal storm<\/a> forecast to bring flooding, heavy winds and rain to the five boroughs.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe worst of the coastal impacts gets going tomorrow afternoon,\u201d Bill Deger, a senior meteorologist with AccuWeather<\/a>, said. \u201cSo there\u2019s a high-tide cycle early in the afternoon, that\u2019s when we expect minor to moderate tidal flooding.\u201d<\/p>\n

Residents should expect another high tide sometime between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. early Monday morning. A third high tide is forecast for Monday afternoon.<\/p>\n

\u201cRight now for the Staten Island, you know, up to the New York Harbor, Battery area, it\u2019s a minor to moderate tidal flooding. You know, nothing like you guys experienced with Sandy, but certainly vulnerable areas along the coast will see some water move a little bit further inland than usual,\u201d added Deger.<\/p>\n

In addition to some coastal flooding, waves could erode beaches in Long Island and the Jersey Shore.<\/p>\n

Deger believes the city should expect a general 1-3 inches of rain, most of which will fall Sunday afternoon into the first part of Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not going to rain the whole time, but there will be periods of heavier rain during that time,\u201d Deger said. \u201cOf course that\u2019s more than enough to cause urban flooding and flooding in low-lying areas.\u201d<\/p>\n

Accompanying the rain will be heightened wind gusts of up to 40-60 mph, which will be \u201cmore than enough\u201d to cause localized or scattered power outages.<\/p>\n

Deger emphasized that tomorrow afternoon into Monday morning will be the time to remain alert for the worst of the rain<\/a>, winds and coastal flooding. Those impacts will carry on overnight and even linger into Monday as this system is proceeding slowly.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s going to take a while to fully exit,\u201d explained Deger. \u201cThe rain begins to taper off later Monday, but, you know, the entire amount of rain with the storm may not exit until Tuesday morning.\u201d<\/p>\n

Those city residents looking to enjoy the sunshine may need to wait until Tuesday afternoon.<\/p>\n
