Spring Weather Means Open Windows and More Noise<\/p>\n
With temperatures expected to climb above 60 degrees this week, many New Yorkers are ready to shake off cabin fever. Opening the windows and letting fresh air into your home is one of the best parts of spring.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s been a long, cold winter, and March has been especially wet, but the signs of spring are finally here.<\/p>\n Unfortunately, open windows can also mean unwanted noise.<\/p>\n When Does Noise Become a Problem in New York?<\/p>\n There\u2019s nothing more frustrating than trying to relax at home while someone else\u2019s music, equipment, or even a late-night lawnmower keeps you awake.<\/p>\n It can be even worse in neighborhoods where parties are common. If you\u2019re not part of the fun, the noise can quickly become disruptive<\/a>, especially late at night.<\/p>\n In many parts of New York State<\/a>, local noise ordinances are in place to address exactly this issue.<\/p>\n New York State is actively trying<\/a> to make things quieter. “Maximum fines for installing illegal equipment will be raised to $1,000, an $850 increase. Inspection stations will also be required to inspect motorcycles to ensure mufflers and exhausts have not been illegally modified”.<\/p>\n Example: Noise Laws in Rochester, New York<\/p>\n In Rochester, there are specific rules about how much noise is allowed and when. The “overnight” law says the excessive noise <\/a>can’t be, “Audible beyond the property line of the premises from which it emanates between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m”.<\/p>\n For example:<\/p>\n Excessive noise is not permitted to travel beyond a property line after 10 p.m.During the day, noise should not carry more than 50 feet beyond a property line<\/p>\n Exactly how these rules are enforced can vary. In some cases, law enforcement may respond to complaints and determine whether the noise is excessive, sometimes even using sound measurement tools.<\/p>\n
