President Trump said Monday that a deal with Iran was \u201cprobably\u201d close to winding down the conflict \u2014 but warned the US would\u00a0obliterate the regime\u2019s power plants, oil wells<\/a>, and its main export hub, Kharg Island, if negotiations fell through.<\/p>\n

Trump noted, however, that a deal was \u201cprobably\u201d close.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe United States of America is in serious discussions with A NEW, AND MORE REASONABLE, REGIME to end our Military Operations in Iran,\u201d Trump wrote on Truth Social.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cGreat progress has been made but, if for any reason a deal is not shortly reached, which it probably will be, and if the Hormuz Strait is not immediately \u2018Open for Business,\u2019 we will conclude our lovely \u2018stay\u2019 in Iran by blowing up and completely obliterating all of their Electric Generating Plants, Oil Wells and Kharg Island.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kharg Island is Iran\u2019s main export hub.<\/p>\n

Trump said the US purposefully hadn\u2019t touched the sites after having previously given an April 6 deadline to Iran.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis will be in retribution for our many soldiers, and others, that Iran has butchered and killed over the old Regime\u2019s 47 year \u2018Reign of Terror\u2019,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The renewed threat came just hours after Trump said late Sunday that the US was negotiating \u201cdirectly and indirectly\u201d with Iran.<\/p>\n

He flagged the possibility, too, of taking Iran\u2019s oil \u2014 a move that would require seizing Kharg Island, the terminal through which nearly all of Iran\u2019s oil exports pass.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe we take Kharg Island, maybe we don\u2019t,\u201d Trump told the Financial Times, noting that any US presence \u201cwould also mean we had to be in there for a while.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a lot of options,\u201d he said, boasting that the US could \u201ceasily\u201d take the island.<\/p>\n

Trump added that the US had about 3,000 targets it would still like to hit in Iran \u2014 after having \u201cbombed 13,000 targets\u201d since Feb. 28 \u2014 but insisted: \u201cA deal could be made fairly quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n

The president gave Tehran a 10-day deadline to reopen the Strait of Hormuz after its\u00a0closure caused oil prices to spike as much as 50%.<\/p>\n

Tehran allowed 10 Pakistan-flagged oil tankers through the strait last week as a \u201cpresent\u201d to the White House, Trump said in his Financial Times interview, but it has since allowed 10 more, bringing the total number exiting the bottlenecked channel to 20.<\/p>\n

On Friday,\u00a03,500 US Marines and sailors<\/a>\u00a0also arrived in the Middle East on the USS Tripoli, amid a broader Pentagon order to deploy 10,000 troops\u00a0to the region.<\/p>\n

Trump has said the forces could be dispatched to secure the Strait as well as Iranian nuclear facilities.<\/p>\n

Secretary of State Marco Rubio also\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0on ABC News\u2019 \u201cGood Morning America\u201d Monday:\u00a0\u201cThey are making threats about controlling the Hormuz Strait\u00a0in perpetuity, creating a tolling system and the like.\u00a0That\u2019s not going to be allowed to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOver time, the US is going to retake control of the straits,\u201d Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent noted on Fox News. \u201cAnd there will be freedom of navigation, whether it is through US escorts or a multinational escort.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rubio emphasized that the US was \u201cgoing to achieve our objectives in a matter of weeks, not months.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Trump administration has engaged in mediated talks with Iran, and has seen its hardline parliament speaker, Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf, as a potentially useful negotiating partner.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s the one who authorized the ships to me,\u201d Trump revealed to the Financial Times. \u201cRemember I said they\u2019re giving me a present? And everyone said: \u2018What\u2019s the present? Bulls\u2013t.\u2019 When they heard about that they kept their mouth shut and the negotiations are going very well.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Ghalibaf publicly denounced the US on Monday, according to Iranian state media outlet IRNA, saying:\u00a0\u201cThe enemy, openly, sends messages of negotiation and dialogue, but secretly is planning a ground attack.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ghalibaf threatened the US that its officials were \u201cunaware that our men are waiting for American soldiers to enter on the ground so they can set them ablaze and punish their regional partners forever.\u201d<\/p>\n

Officials in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan have primarily mediated talks with the US \u2014 foreign ministers from each nation met in Islamabad on Sunday.<\/p>\n

On Monday, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi pleaded with Trump to \u201chelp us stop this war.\u201d<\/p>\n
