WASHINGTON \u2014 President Trump demanded \u201cdelayed courage\u201d from the United Kingdom and other nations to help the US reopen the Strait of Hormuz<\/a>, a critical oil chokepoint\u00a0where over a fifth of the world\u2019s seaborne oil flows through\u00a0annually.<\/p>\n

Trump, in a series of Truth Social posts, accused US allies like France of being \u201cVERY UNHELPFUL\u201d in the war and bashed the UK for declining \u201cto get involved in the decapitation of\u00a0Iran,\u201d even as the Brits were\u00a0griping about how the chokepoint in the strait has affected their oil\u00a0supply.<\/p>\n

The president later clarified that the US was not preparing to withdraw military assets from the region<\/a>, but added, \u201cat some point, I\u00a0will,\u00a0not quite yet.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCountries have to come in and take care of it. Iran has been decimated, but they\u2019re going to have to come in and do their own work,\u201d he told CBS News.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth echoed Trump\u2019s remarks<\/a> but noted that there was \u201clots\u201d the US was \u201cdoing as well, some of which is known, some of which is not known, to set the conditions\u201d for the strait to open back up.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll of those countries that can\u2019t get jet fuel because of the Strait of Hormuz, like the United Kingdom, which refused to get involved in the decapitation of Iran, I have a suggestion for you: Number 1, buy from the U.S., we have plenty, and Number 2, build up some delayed courage, go to the Strait, and just TAKE IT,\u201d the president\u00a0challenged<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ll have to start learning how to fight for yourself, the U.S.A. won\u2019t be there to help you anymore, just like you weren\u2019t there for us,\u201d he added. \u201cIran has\u00a0been, essentially,\u00a0decimated. The hard part is done. Go get your own oil!\u201d<\/p>\n

Hegseth, in a Pentagon press conference, also underscored\u00a0that the US<\/a> \u2014 the world\u2019s largest\u00a0producer of oil \u2014\u00a0is far less dependent on petroleum from the strait than\u00a0other nations.<\/p>\n

The defense secretary warned Iran that it should \u201copen it for business \u2026 or we have options.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not just the United States Navy. Last time I checked, there was supposed to be a big, bad Royal Navy,\u201d Hegseth also chided. \u201cWe use less than most, in fact, dramatically less than most. So the world ought to pay attention to be prepared to stand up.\u201d<\/p>\n

Back in 2024, the US\u00a0garnered\u00a0over\u00a02% of its oil<\/a>\u00a0consumption through the strait, according to data from the\u00a0US Energy Information Administration<\/a>. Notably,\u00a0due to the globalization of oil markets,\u00a0American consumers still feel the pinch of the crisis at the oil chokepoint.<\/p>\n

Prices at the gas pump jumped past $4 per gallon on average nationally on Tuesday,\u00a0according to data<\/a>\u00a0from the\u00a0American Automobile Association. Before Operation Epic Fury,\u00a0it\u00a0was below $3 a gallon. Oil prices have also surged past $100 a\u00a0barrel.<\/p>\n

Iran has been causing mayhem\u00a0at\u00a0the strait, which sits off its southwest coast, to extract an economic toll on the US and prompt its allies to sour on the war.<\/p>\n

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer<\/a>\u00a0has\u00a0defended his decision not to jump into the fight, posting on X Monday that \u201cI will always make decisions that are in the national interest.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s why we aren\u2019t getting dragged into the Middle East conflict.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump also\u00a0blasted the French<\/a>, accusing Paris of halting\u00a0\u201cplanes headed to Israel, loaded up with military supplies\u201d\u00a0from flying over their territory.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrance has been VERY UNHELPFUL with respect to the \u2018Butcher of Iran,\u2019 who has been successfully\u00a0eliminated!\u00a0The U.S.A. will REMEMBER!!!,\u201d\u00a0he jabbed.<\/p>\n

The warnings come after Trump gave Tehran an April 6 deadline<\/a> to return to the negotiating table or risk having its energy infrastructure \u2014 including electrical plants and oil wells \u2014 completely obliterated in a bombing campaign.<\/p>\n

He threatened that the US<\/a> would take Kharg Island, a central hub in Iran\u2019s oil exports, out of the Persian Gulf, if the Strait of Hormuz isn\u2019t reopened.<\/p>\n
