The Metropolitan Transportation Authority completed the upgrades at Lexington Av/53 St and Canal St stations on budget and ahead of schedule, transit officials announced. The projects are part of the agency’s broader push to improve accessibility across the system, with the two elevators serving stations that handle more than 84,000 riders on an average weekday.

Record Pace of Elevator Modernization

The MTA’s been ramping up its elevator replacement program at a historic pace. The agency completed a record 39 elevator replacements in 2025, more than doubling the previous record of 16 set in 2021. This year, the MTA’s already finished three elevator replacements, officials said. The accelerated timeline reflects the agency’s commitment to reducing service disruptions and maintaining aging infrastructure before equipment failures force emergency repairs that can leave stations inaccessible for extended periods.

Comprehensive Equipment Overhauls

The modernization work included full replacement of elevator cabs, equipment upgrades, and improvements to monitoring systems for better reliability, according to the transit agency. Mid-American Elevator Co. served as the manufacturer and installer for both elevators. The Lexington Av/53 St station serves over 47,500 weekday riders and connects to nine bus routes, while the Canal St station serves approximately 37,200 riders daily. The upgrades ensure smoother rides, more reliable service, and enhanced security features at both locations.

Ongoing Projects Across Four Boroughs

The MTA currently has additional elevator replacement projects in progress across the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan, officials said. The agency didn’t provide specific timelines for when those projects will be completed or how many elevators are included in the current phase of work. Transit officials said the improvements demonstrate the MTA’s commitment to providing accessible and dependable service for all riders.

What Riders Need to Know

The newly modernized elevators at both stations are now in service and available for riders who need accessible routes to subway platforms. Riders with mobility needs can expect improved reliability and smoother operation at both locations. Moovit provides real-time updates on elevator status and accessible routing options for MTA subway stations throughout Manhattan and the other boroughs.

HomeNewsNYC MTA Upgrades Two Manhattan Station Elevators MTA completes elevator upgrades at two Manhattan subway stations ahead of…

[35
72148,4022,72154,22869,72145,5456,58654,75,84,83,5031,72151,72143,72153,72146,9,24,12,63,5001,23948,72150,45194,28399,72144,72140,72141,72152,72147,72142,72139,9516,72149
0":"post-181008","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-manhattan","8":"tag-bike-sharing","9":"tag-breaking-news","10":"tag-city-transportation","11":"tag-city-travel","12":"tag-commute-tips","13":"tag-electric-vehicles","14":"tag-latest-updates","15":"tag-manhattan","16":"tag-manhattan-headlines","17":"tag-manhattan-news","18":"tag-mass-transit","19":"tag-mobility-solutions","20":"tag-mobility-technology","21":"tag-mobility-updates","22":"tag-moovit-news","23":"tag-new-york","24":"tag-new-york-city","25":"tag-news","26":"tag-nyc","27":"tag-public-transit","28":"tag-public-transportation","29":"tag-real-time-transit","30":"tag-ride-sharing","31":"tag-smart-cities","32":"tag-sustainable-transport","33":"tag-transit-news","34":"tag-transportation-innovation","35":"tag-transportation-news","36":"tag-transportation-updates","37":"tag-urban-lifestyle","38":"tag-urban-mobility","39":"tag-urban-planning","40":"tag-walking-routes
["GET
