The gunman on the run after shooting a security guard for a Manhattan supportive housing nonprofit<\/a>\u00a0is a former resident of the facility who had an ongoing beef with the victim, the Daily News has learned.<\/p>\n

Cops are still searching for the triggerman, who detectives believe is a former resident of the Prince George <\/a>on E. 28th St. in NoMad just a few blocks from Madison Square Park, <\/a>a police source said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s a very selfless person,\u201d the victim\u2019s step-sister told The News Tuesday. \u201cThat was one of the jobs that he\u2019s been doing for a long time that he loves to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 49-year-old security guard had stepped out to get lunch and was coming out of a Whole Foods down the block from his job when he was shot about 12:30 p.m. Monday.<\/p>\n

The gunman, one witness said, opened fire \u201cin broad daylight in front of 70 people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Medics rushed the victim to Bellevue Hospital<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s still in the hospital. Right now we don\u2019t know much of his prognosis,\u201d said the step-sister, who asked not to be named. \u201c(Doctors) don\u2019t have much to say. They\u2019re just working on him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Police sources and residents of the Prince George said the gunman had an ongoing beef with the security guard and that the two men had argued in the days leading up to the shooting.<\/p>\n

One resident said the guard had worked at the St. George for about three months and always \u201ctalks back to all the residents who give him trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy friend had a dispute with him last Friday,\u201d the resident recalled. \u201cHe asked the security guard to come down to the street to fight. He was calling for him to come out to the street.\u201d<\/p>\n

The victim\u2019s step-sister said he would avoid that sort of conflict.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s not the type of person who argue with people,\u201d she said. \u201cEven if you try to force him, he would just brush it aside. He never try to start nothing with people. If you try to start something with him, the best you get out of him is like \u2018Nah man, it\u2019s not necessary.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s very friendly, very helping,\u201d she added. \u201cThat\u2019s his nature since he was young. That\u2019s just how he was. He still is that way.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Prince George \u2014 which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places \u2014 includes 416 units of affordable housing operated by Breaking Ground, a non-for-profit that builds and operates supportive housing at locations throughout the city.<\/p>\n

\u201cBreaking Ground is deeply saddened by the incident involving one of our security guards,\u201d Miranda Hall, a spokeswoman for the nonprofit organization, said in a statement Monday. \u201cOur thoughts are with them and their loved ones, and the safety of our tenants, staff and community is our top priority.\u201d<\/p>\n
