An acting Brooklyn school superintendent embroiled in a controversy involving allegations against her husband<\/a> has been selected for the permanent job.<\/p>\n

Erin Lynch-Reyes, then-interim superintendent of District 21, faced scrutiny after the United Federation of Teachers claimed the union had \u201cgood faith basis\u201d to believe her husband, Miguel Reyes, was using a pseudonym to defame one of their reps on social media<\/a>, the Daily News reported a month ago.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to allow you to reintroduce yourself,\u201d Chancellor Kamar Samuels said Monday at I.S. 096 Seth Low in Bensonhurst, where Lynch-Reyes previously served as principal.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs you know, Superintendent Lynch, she was the acting superintendent. But as of today, she\u2019s formally appointed as the permanent superintendent,\u201d he added, according to a video<\/a>\u00a0shared by District 21\u2019s board of PTA presidents.<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you so much. Thank you for putting your trust into me,\u201d Lynch-Reyes replied. \u201cThere\u2019s nothing that I\u2019m more excited about doing than continuing to lead this district.\u201d<\/p>\n

The News has reached out to the Department of Education, UFT and Lynch-Reyes for comment.<\/p>\n

Lynch-Reyes, a veteran educator with deep ties in District 21 as a former principal and the prior superintendent\u2019s second-in-command, has not publicly acknowledged the allegations, nor has she personally been accused of any wrongdoing.<\/p>\n

The controversy surfaced in January when the UFT\u2019s general counsel sent a cease-and-desist letter to the city\u2019s DOE, detailing the claims.<\/p>\n

According to the letter, Lynch-Reyes\u2019 permanent appointment was allegedly delayed because of a labor dispute between teachers and their principal at District 21\u2019s P.S.\/I.S. 99 Isaac Asimov School of Science and Literature<\/a>, which happened under her watch.<\/p>\n

After the delay came to light, a social media user claiming to be a P.S.\/I.S. 99 employee named \u201cJose Tricoche\u201d launched into an angry tirade against District 21 union rep Adam Shapiro, including false and disparaging claims about his personal life, according to the UFT and a post reviewed by the Daily News.<\/p>\n

The user has not posted about Shapiro since the letter.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe UFT has a good faith basis to believe that \u2018Jose Tricoche\u2019 is Ms. Lynch-Reyes\u2019 spouse, Miguel Reyes,\u201d UFT general counsel Beth Norton wrote on Jan. 13 to the DOE\u2019s top lawyer Liz Vladeck.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe UFT demands that the Department immediately cease and desist from engaging in fraudulent and defamatory online attacks of UFT representatives.\u201d<\/p>\n

The controversy divided the local community.<\/p>\n

Close to 600 letters<\/a> were sent to the chancellor, asking him not to appoint Lynch-Reyes. In interviews with The News, though, some teachers and parents said the experienced administrator should not be held responsible for allegations about her husband or doubted the validity of the claims.<\/p>\n

In Monday\u2019s video, Lynch-Reyes looked out at the people convened at her former school, Seth Low, saying: \u201cThis is this is my \u2018why,\u2019 and this is what keeps me going. So thank you all so much. I really appreciate it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo who are you again?\u201d Samuels prompted the new superintendent.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, I am Superintendent Erin Lynch-Reyes!\u201d she responded.<\/p>\n

The Presidents\u2019 Council of District 21, the board of PTA presidents that posted the clip, said Lynch-Reyes\u2019 permanent appointment was \u201csuch a well-deserved milestone\u201d and wished her \u201ccontinued success in the role.\u201d<\/p>\n
