He video-called his mom during his interview with NY1 and said, \u201cThis is the best way we can talk right now. And that\u2019s not fun when the hope was that we were going to spend the holiday together.\u201d<\/p>\n
His mother, Goldie, said she was looking forward to spending the holiday with Pasternak\u2019s son, Dov \u2014 her youngest grandson.<\/p>\n
Pasternak said it is \u201cNot safe to go and visit at the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe reality is right now, they are living in a state of siege most of the time. Our family chat is just a string of there\u2019s a siren. We\u2019re going to a bomb shelter. There\u2019s another siren,\u201d he said. \u201cHow are we going to get through the holiday? How are we going to prep? It\u2019s kind of hard. There aren\u2019t a lot of recipes, cooking recipes that factor in running to a bomb shelter for 20 minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n
Pasternak\u2019s family in Israel has spent a lot of time in bomb shelters over the past month. He said it is hard for the family to be apart for the Seder.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen you\u2019re with family for these things, there\u2019s a certain amount of, like, \u2018oh, this is how I grew up.\u2019 And this is how I celebrated as a little kid. And you want to be able to share that with your kid,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n
Hiram Shaish\u2019s family was also supposed to be in Israel for the holiday. He said his kids were looking forward to spending time with their grandparents and cousins.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat I told my kids was there\u2019s only one thing more disappointing than not going to Israel for Pesach \u2014 is going to Israel and being in a bomb shelter for a week,\u201d Shaish said. \u201cIt\u2019s very disappointing. It\u2019s like the best time to be there with family.\u201d<\/p>\n
Shaish said Seders within Israel will also be affected because of the ongoing war.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe rules are you can\u2019t really congregate. People are not allowed to congregate and depending on where you live, you know, you have to think about your exit strategy in case there\u2019s a siren and whether there\u2019s enough space,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The last words spoken at every Seder are, \u201cL\u2019shana haba b\u2019yerushalayim,\u201d which translates to \u201cnext year in Jerusalem,\u201d a sentiment that carries more weight for those who were meant to be there this year.<\/p>\n
