Police are searching for three suspects who they say slashed a 16-year-old boy near East Tremont Avenue in Westchester Square Monday afternoon.<\/p>\n
Police say the attack happened near 2560 East Tremont Avenue after 2:30 p.m.<\/p>\n
The teen, identified as Hugo Reyes, says he and his girlfriend were simply walking home when the group approached them.<\/p>\n
Surveillance video obtained by News 12 appears to show one of the suspects running up with a knife \u2014 swinging toward Hugo\u2019s neck \u2014 before chasing the teens down the block.<\/p>\n
Hugo says he ran as fast as he could, believing his life depended on it.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t even know their names\u2026I don\u2019t even know what school they go to,\u201d Hugo said. \u201cThey probably don\u2019t even know me.\u201d<\/p>\n
His mother, watching the video back, was overcome with emotion.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey want to take my son away from me for no reason,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Hugo and his family say it was completely unprovoked.<\/p>\n
The teen, who dreams of becoming a mechanic, was taken to the hospital with injuries. He received stitches but says he\u2019s grateful it wasn\u2019t worse. He credited his jacket with stopping the blade from causing more serious harm.<\/p>\n
\u201cThank God I\u2019m here today,\u201d Hugo said.<\/p>\n
Now recovering at home, his family is calling for justice and urging others to stay alert.<\/p>\n
\u201cPlease be aware of your surroundings,\u201d his mother said. \u201cI could have been planning a funeral for my son.\u201d<\/p>\n
Police had not announced any arrests and were still searching for the three suspects as of Tuesday night.<\/p>\n
