Photo: Bebeto Matthews\/AP<\/p>\n<p>WASHINGTON, D.C. \u2013 PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP on Wednesday attended oral arguments at the Supreme Court for the Trump v. Barbara birthright citizenship case, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/04\/01\/trump-supreme-court-birthright-citizenship.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">CNBC reports<\/a>, marking the first time a sitting president has done so.<\/p>\n<p>The case addresses the constitutionality of an executive order issued by Trump on Jan. 20, 2025, that seeks to adopt a reading of the 14th Amendment that would deny citizenship to children born in the U.S. whose parents are not citizens or legal residents. This would be contrary to most established interpretations of the amendment, and could leave thousands of children in legal limbo, if the current injunctions against it are overruled.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Brooklyn U.S. Rep. Yvette Clarke sharply criticized both the case and Trump\u2019s attendance in a statement: \u201c[T[he 14th Amendment\u2019s promise of citizenship to all those born on our soil is unambiguous. But Donald Trump has never believed the Constitution should come before his prejudices. His unprecedented decision to attend today\u2019s oral arguments in the Supreme Court is nothing more than a deeply cheap intimidation tactic against a coequal branch of government, borne of the same desperation and disrespect for the law that have defined his presidency since Day 1.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Justices appeared skeptical of the administration\u2019s arguments.
