The recent letter regarding the Sarachek tournament, \u201cWhat We Choose to Celebrate,\u201d on March 26, raises an important question about how we balance our communal passions. However, as we reflect on the incredible energy that filled the YU campus two weeks ago, I believe there is a positive perspective that deserves to be highlighted.<\/p>\n
We are incredibly fortunate to live in a community where our young men and women have the opportunity to come together for high-quality, supervised fun. In a world that offers many harmful distractions, providing our youth with a healthy, spirited outlet like this tournament is something to be celebrated. It is a rare moment where students from across the country can build friendships and share in the excitement of competition within a Jewish environment.<\/p>\n
It is also vital to remember the context of these students\u2019 daily lives. These are the same young men and women who spend time every day immersed in the study of Torah. In fact, in direct contradiction to the assumption that the beit midrash was being ignored, Yeshivat Frisch made it a priority to take their entire senior class to Yeshiva University specifically to learn with Rabbi Lebowitz, a rosh yeshiva at RIETS, before the game began. This clearly demonstrates that for our students and schools, Torah remains the anchor even in the midst of a basketball tournament.<\/p>\n
