{"id":18272,"date":"2025-10-27T13:07:07","date_gmt":"2025-10-27T13:07:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/18272\/"},"modified":"2025-10-27T13:07:07","modified_gmt":"2025-10-27T13:07:07","slug":"brown-water-worries-harlem-residents-despite-dep-assurances-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/18272\/","title":{"rendered":"Brown water worries Harlem residents despite DEP assurances"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some Harlem residents say they\u2019ve been dealing with brown, discolored water running from their faucets for weeks, prompting frustration, distrust and a rush to buy bottled water.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I got up this morning, I turned it on I was like really shocked it\u2019s totally brown, it\u2019s not even light, it\u2019s brown,\u201d said Harlem resident Rose Miller.<\/p>\n<p>Miller said the problem has persisted throughout her apartment.<\/p>\n<p>What You Need To Know<\/p>\n<p>Harlem residents say brown, discolored water has been flowing from their faucets for weeks<br \/>\n<br \/>The city\u2019s Department of Environmental Protection says testing shows the water is safe to drink<br \/>\n<br \/>DEP officials attribute the discoloration to naturally occurring minerals in the Croton Reservoir System<br \/>\n<br \/>Residents are being urged to report brown water to 311 as hydrant flushing continues<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I turn on my faucet in the kitchen, in the bathroom, I flush my toilet, the shower \u2014 brown, it\u2019s just coming out brown and sediment is being left in the sink in the tub,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Other residents describe the same issue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt looks like poop water to be honest,\u201d said another resident, Ali, who did not give his last name. \u201cThat\u2019s just what it looks like \u2014 it looks like dirty water.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many say they\u2019ve stopped using tap water altogether.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously we can\u2019t drink it because we don\u2019t know exactly what\u2019s in it so I have to go and buy cases of water, so it\u2019s terrible,\u201d said Miller.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t drink from the tap \u2014 we have our Brita, but we go buy from the deli because we can\u2019t drink that water,\u201d added Ali.<\/p>\n<p>The city\u2019s Department of Environmental Protection told NY1 that testing confirms New York City\u2019s drinking water remains safe. Officials say the discoloration is caused by naturally occurring minerals in the Upstate Croton Reservoir System, which serves parts of Upper Manhattan, Harlem and the Bronx.<\/p>\n<p>According to the DEP, the mineral content can react to heat, making the discoloration more visible in hot water.<\/p>\n<p>In a post on X, the agency said residents may see intermittent brown water this weekend as crews flush hydrants in the area, and urged anyone affected to report it to 311.<\/p>\n<p>Still, residents said they\u2019re not convinced.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI doubt that because it tastes weird and the sediment it leaves behind \u2014 it\u2019s just not safe at all,\u201d said Ali. \u201cThat can\u2019t be true.
