Drought conditions in regions north and west of upstate New York indicate it\u2019s a possibility.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-channels-pixel.ex.co\/events\/0012000001fxZm9AAE?integrationType=DEFAULT&amp;template=design%2Farticle%2Fplatypus_two_column.tpl\" alt=\"\" class=\"x1px y1px vh abs\" aria-hidden=\"true\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cCertainly, the ingredients are there for a good wildfire season,\u201d said Ryan Torn, a professor at the University at Albany\u2019s Department of Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences. \u201cIf that\u2019s the case, we\u2019re likely to see some sort of impact for that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>There are many factors that lead to wildfires, but one of the main ones is drought, Torn explained. The Rocky Mountains had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drought.gov\/drought-status-updates\/snow-drought-current-conditions-and-impacts-west-2026-02-05\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">one of the lowest snowpacks in recorded history<\/a> this season, and what fell is melting quickly, Torn said. But the Canadian province of Quebec\u00a0\u2014 where wildfires sent a thick haze of smoke to upstate New York in 2023, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesunion.com\/news\/article\/canadian-wildfire-smoke-nys-capital-region-end-18138024.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">causing the worst air quality since 2002<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 is also <a href=\"https:\/\/agriculture.canada.ca\/en\/agricultural-production\/weather\/canadian-drought-monitor\/current-drought-conditions\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">currently under a moderate drought<\/a>. And while smoke is more likely to move east into the Capital Region from western wildfires, smoke blowing south from Quebec can\u2019t be ruled out\u00a0\u2014 and it would be much more severe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe farther away the fire is, the less the impact is going to be,\u201d Torn said. \u201cThink of putting a dye in a small container of water.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If fire breaks out in more remote parts of Quebec\u2019s forests, where crews can\u2019t as easily get to them, and north-south winds blow this summer, there could be a repeat of 2023.<\/p>\n<p>In 2025, the U.S. saw 77,850 reported wildfires that burned over 5 million acres, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nifc.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/NICC\/2-Predictive%20Services\/Intelligence\/Annual%20Reports\/2025\/annual_report_2025_0.pdf\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">National Interagency Coordination Center Wildland Fire Summary and Statistics Annual Report<\/a>. While less land was burned overall, more wildfires were reported\u00a0\u2014 perhaps the most notable being the wildfires that swept across Los Angeles County in California. In fall 2024, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesunion.com\/hudsonvalley\/news\/article\/jennings-creek-whitehouse-wildfires-19909780.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jennings Creek wildfire<\/a> burned thousands of acres in southern Orange County and northern New Jersey. Already this year, state forest rangers helped extinguish at least eight fires that burned a total of 22.8 acres of land, according to the state Department of Environmental Conservation. The largest was in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eveningtribune.com\/story\/news\/fire\/2026\/03\/23\/wildfire-in-steuben-county-highlights-spring-brush-burn-ban-dec-says\/89248721007\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Steuben County town of Bath<\/a>, where nearly 11 acres burned. Half the fires were caused by debris burning, according to DEC, which noted the statewide ban on residential brush burning is in effect until May 14.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>The Capital Region and Hudson Valley are currently considered to be under \u201clow\u201d fire risk,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysmesonet.org\/weather\/firewx\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to data from the New York State Mesonet at the University at Albany<\/a>, but abnormally dry conditions are currently reported in <a href=\"https:\/\/droughtmonitor.unl.edu\/CurrentMap\/StateDroughtMonitor.aspx?NY\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">parts of the Adirondacks and Hudson Valley<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Rising temperatures paired with gusty winds in the spring can lead to that seasonal fire risk, noted Abbey Gant, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Albany. Increased precipitation would decrease that risk; it\u2019s harder to start a wildfire if its fuel is wet.
