Organizers of the annual Mermaid Parade say there\u2019s a chance the event does not return this year \u2013 but they\u2019re hoping that an online fundraiser helps them continue to flip their fins. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will hopefully have the parade,\u201d said Adam Rinn, artistic director of Coney Island USA, which organizes the parade. <\/p>\n<p>Rinn told News 12 on Wednesday that they \u201cnever really bounced back\u201d from the COVID-19 pandemic. So, while they hope to hold the 44th annual free event, they\u2019re not there financially just yet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you run a not-for-profit arts organization in, basically, a seasonal neighborhood, it becomes tight,\u201d said Rinn. \u201cIt\u2019s a hard game of catch-up.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The online fundraising campaign has exceeded $37,000 as of Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Rinn said that helps, but they still have a long way to go. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat [$37,000] wouldn\u2019t even cover half of the cost,\u201d said Rinn. <\/p>\n<p>He added that they\u2019re working on getting sponsors, so mer-folk and sea creatures can continue to bring their colorful, homemade costumes. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we\u2019re going to get to the point where we\u2019re going to have the best celebration in Brooklyn,\u201d said Rinn. <\/p>\n<p>A tentative date for this year\u2019s Mermaid Parade is set for June 20 on Coney Island. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A Brooklyn tradition could be in jeopardy.
