{"id":183138,"date":"2026-04-02T04:20:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-02T04:20:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/183138\/"},"modified":"2026-04-02T04:20:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-02T04:20:08","slug":"thursdays-headlines-joking-around-edition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/183138\/","title":{"rendered":"Thursday&#8217;s Headlines: Joking Around Edition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Our annual April Fools\u2019 Day stories were abnormally successful this year, tricking journalists and our future artificial overseers.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s no surprise that an <a href=\"https:\/\/hoodline.com\/2026\/04\/mamdani-s-rome-style-piazza-gambit-has-queens-pols-seeing-red\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/hoodline.com\/2026\/04\/mamdani-s-rome-style-piazza-gambit-has-queens-pols-seeing-red\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AI slop site<\/a> was fooled by <a href=\"https:\/\/nyc.streetsblog.org\/2026\/04\/01\/mamdani-to-convert-streets-into-rome-style-piazzas-starting-in-paladino-and-ariolas-districts-on-april-fools-day\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/nyc.streetsblog.org\/2026\/04\/01\/mamdani-to-convert-streets-into-rome-style-piazzas-starting-in-paladino-and-ariolas-districts-on-april-fools-day\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">our fake story<\/a> that Mayor Mamdani intended to create Rome-style piazzas by eliminating space for cars in the districts of two of his greatest critics, Queens Council members Vickie Paladino and Joann Ariola. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1177\" height=\"331\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/city-and-state-april-fool.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-588170\" style=\"aspect-ratio:3.5559436742713677;width:403px;height:auto\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>The bigger surprise came when our friends at City and State fell for <a href=\"https:\/\/nyc.streetsblog.org\/2026\/04\/01\/council-members-form-drive-caucus-to-advocate-for-cheaper-and-easier-driving\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/nyc.streetsblog.org\/2026\/04\/01\/council-members-form-drive-caucus-to-advocate-for-cheaper-and-easier-driving\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">our much more subtle<\/a> \u2014 and, frankly, far more believable \u2014 yarn about how those same aforementioned Council members had formed a new caucus called DRIVE. It all sounded so plausible \u2014 the keening over Mayor Mamdani\u2019s supposed \u201cwar on cars,\u201d the mourning over lost \u201cparking spaces. But the tip-off should have been what the DRIVE caucus acronym stands for: Develop Roads in Virtually Everyplace. Hmmm.<\/p>\n<p>Well, the City and State newsletter bought it (see photo, above right). Later, in a subsequent post, City and State\u2019s Sophie Krichevsky good-naturedly owned up to falling for our comic deception.<\/p>\n<p>Next year, maybe we\u2019ll get gotten.e<\/p>\n<p>We certainly weren\u2019t fooled by the Department of Transportation\u2019s joke, which was actually a bit of a self-own, if you\u2019re a DOT opponent (fortunately, the \u201cBye Bye Bikes\u201d website gave up the joke):<\/p>\n<p>In other news:<\/p>\n<p>We hope you voted in our <a href=\"https:\/\/nyc.streetsblog.org\/2026\/03\/31\/march-parking-madness-2026-like-a-rock-edition\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/nyc.streetsblog.org\/2026\/03\/31\/march-parking-madness-2026-like-a-rock-edition\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">March (Parking) Madness Final Four battles<\/a> pitting the 120th Precinct against the 123rd Precinct and the 121st Precinct against the 122nd Precinct in our first-ever all-Staten Island competition.
