BRONX – A man was shot and killed by police Thursday morning in the Bronx, officials said.<\/p>\n
What we know:<\/p>\n
Officers responded around 6:45 a.m. to 105 Willis Ave. to apprehend a 44-year-old man who had an active search warrant, police said during a morning press conference, noting the information remains preliminary.<\/p>\n
The backstory:<\/p>\n
A woman granted officers access to the location, where they found the man sitting on a bed with what appeared to be a firearm, officials said. Officers repeatedly ordered him to show his hands, and the man told them he had a gun.<\/p>\n
Authorities said the encounter lasted about a minute and a half, during which officers asked him multiple times to drop the weapon.<\/p>\n
The man was shot once in the face and transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead, officials said.<\/p>\n
Police said it remains unclear whether the weapon was real and that it could potentially have been a BB gun. Investigators have not yet determined whether the man pointed the weapon at officers.<\/p>\n
Officials said the man was on parole for a 2013 murder conviction and had prior arrests, including for rape in 1997 and attempted murder. He also failed to comply with requirements to register as a Level 3 sex offender, police said.<\/p>\n
Authorities said body-worn camera footage exists, and the investigation remains ongoing.<\/p>\n
