The lockdown era brought us some unusual streaming successes, and while Tiger King has become the unfortunate symbol of the year 2020, one Netflix masterpiece was also a niche TV show that became a global hit<\/a>. A show about a troubled young woman’s chess career is not the obvious formula for gaining global recognition, but The Queen’s Gambit<\/a> surprised us.<\/p>\n

The series was praised by critics and audiences, gaining respective 96% and 94% positive Rotten Tomatoes ratings, and unlike many pandemic TV successes, The Queen’s Gambit is still worth watching after six years<\/a>. Part of the show’s acclaim is due to the performances of everyone involved, and while the story could continue, one of The Queen’s Gambit cast<\/a> members has shut the idea down.<\/p>\n

The Queen’s Gambit Is So Good, But It Doesn’t Need A Season 2<\/p>\n

Anya Taylor-Joy has addressed the possibility of The Queen’s Gambit season 2<\/a> in an interview with Entertainment Tonight<\/a>, saying “You know what, I think it’s so beautiful as it is. I feel like it’s currently in a situation where like, if we added anything to it, it might take away from it. So I think that story is, like, very nicely wrapped up with a bow.”<\/p>\n

Many fans of the show will likely share her opinion, as there have been plenty of great TV shows in a variety of genres that have been ruined by unnecessary sequels. The Queen’s Gambit’s ending<\/a> is an understated but welcome finale, showing Beth Harmon at peace, having won her big match, and settling down to play chess for the joy of it.<\/p>\n

Of all the great miniseries that nailed their finales<\/a>, The Queen’s Gambit arguably has the most potential for a sequel. There would be plenty of opportunity to continue Beth’s story, but this could risk ruining a series that is now a rarity on streaming platforms. Many successful miniseries are now getting sequels, leaving The Queen’s Gambit as a perfect standalone show.<\/p>\n

It is virtually impossible to imagine The Queen’s Gambit without Anya Taylor-Joy, whose two latest movies are The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Dune: Part 3, which are both yet to be released. As she has no interest in continuing the show, this could keep the miniseries safe as a bingeable seven-part story, rather than the beginning of a franchise.<\/p>\n

The Queen’s Gambit Is Still Anya Taylor-Joy’s Best Work<\/p>\n

Anya Taylor-Joy has been central to some critically-acclaimed dramas, including Peaky Blinders, The Menu, and Emma. In 2020, she was already known for her roles in the movies The Witch and Split, and the TV show Peaky Blinders, but playing Beth Harmon in The Queen’s Gambit introduced her to the wider world, outside of her previous, slightly more niche, projects.<\/p>\n

Taylor-Joy is still involved in mainstream productions, as well as experimental projects. She replaced Charlize Theron as the iconic road warrior Furiosa in the Mad Max saga, and is a longtime collaborator with director Robert Eggers. She has recently been taking on a new role of executive producer, with the 2025 movie, Sacrifice and the upcoming 2026 miniseries, Lucky.<\/p>\n

That said, The Queen’s Gambit remains Anya Taylor-Joy’s best Netflix show<\/a>, and arguably her best project of all time. Not only does the series tell a perfectly-written story, but the cast was one of the best in any TV show. The Queen’s Gambit highlighted her talent for conveying several intense emotions at once through her eyes, and bringing her own experiences to the role.<\/p>\n

While 2020’s TV was dominated by larger-than-life characters and shocking visuals, Taylor-Joy’s work in The Queen’s Gambit was an antidote that has stood the test of time, and it remains a beloved TV show that should never be rebooted<\/a>. The Queen’s Gambit is still aging well, and with just seven episodes, it can be binged in just one day.<\/p>\n
