\n The National Labor Relations Board ordered Amazon to engage in bargaining with a union representing workers at the company’s facility in Staten Island. <\/p>\n
The board refuted Amazon’s claim that the Amazon Labor Union was not the exclusive representative of employees at the facility, and that it was not obligated to engage in bargaining. It said in a Thursday ruling that the company’s refusal to bargin violated the National Labor Relations Act. <\/p>\n
The NLRB also ordered Amazon to post a notice at the facility stating that employees have the right to join the union and that it would engage in bargaining. <\/p>\n
Amazon said the NLRB wrongly certified the union election in March 2022, which it said was improperly influenced by both NLRB and ALU representatives. <\/p>\n
“This decision is just part of the process of challenging the underlying certification,” Amazon spokesperson Eileen Hards said Thursday. “We’re confident an unbiased court will overturn the original certification, and we look forward to the opportunity for our team to fairly voice their opinions. <\/p>\n
“The union formed with about 5,500 warehouse workers at the Staten Island facility in 2022, and affiliated with the Teamsters in 2024. <\/p>\n
Amazon sought to overturn the results of the 2022 election. That request was denied by an NLRB panel in 2024, though the company said at the time that it would appeal that ruling. <\/p>\n
“Amazon’s strategy these last few years has been to delay, delay, delay — and the NLRB confirmed it because the law is not on their side,” Randy Korgan, who directs the Amazon division of the Teamsters, said Thursday. <\/p>\n
