Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the City Council are locked in a budget battle over how to close a multibillion-dollar deficit<\/a>, with starkly different visions emerging ahead of a June deadline.<\/p>\n

Mamdani has proposed raising property taxes<\/a> and tapping into the city\u2019s reserves<\/a>, while the council argues that re-estimates and spending cuts offer a more sustainable path forward.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou cannot build a sustainable city on one shots, dipping into rainy day funds or inventing new fees,\u201d Councilman Phil Wong said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are not cutting services, we have said that time and time again,\u201d\u00a0Councilwoman Linda Lee added.<\/p>\n

The City Council is pushing back forcefully against Mamdani\u2019s criticism of its $6 billion savings proposal<\/a>, which he called \u201cunrealistic.\u201d<\/p>\n

Local lawmakers responded publicly, with several posting on X and describing the mayor\u2019s assessment as \u201cdisingenuous\u201d and \u201cdeeply misleading.\u201d<\/p>\n

Councilwoman Virginia Maloney also took aim at the mayor\u2019s remarks, saying, \u201cI know math is hard.\u201d<\/p>\n

She told NY1 that the council examined the budget closely.<\/p>\n

\u201cLine item by line item, to try and identify savings and ensure that we don\u2019t do two things: One, begin raiding the rainy-day fund \u2014 which really needs to be preserved for emergencies \u2014 and two: increase property taxes,\u201d Maloney said.<\/p>\n

The council\u2019s plan, unveiled Wednesday, is intended as an alternative to what members describe as the mayor\u2019s overly pessimistic approach, which includes potential property tax increases and drawing from city savings.<\/p>\n

Mamdani rejected that characterization and doubled down on his criticism, referring to the proposal as \u201cSpeaker Julie Menin\u2019s budget proposal.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf her proposal was adopted it would result in slashing billions of dollars for agency budgets and working New Yorker\u2019s would pay the price,\u201d Mamdani said.<\/p>\n

Lee disputed the mayor\u2019s claims, particularly around vacancy savings \u2014 funds tied to unfilled city positions.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese are not made up numbers. They are numbers that are city full time employees that were in the budget and simply what happened is they didn\u2019t fill the positions. All were saying simply is put that back in the budget and recognize that as a revenue,\u201d Lee said.<\/p>\n

Mamdani is expected to release his executive budget plan in the coming weeks. Council members say their financial team conducted a thorough review and stands by its analysis of the city\u2019s finances.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey raised some very valid items of savings, and I think we should look into it considerably rather them reject them as a whole,\u201d said Wong.<\/p>\n

City Hall must close a $5.4 billion budget gap in order to pass a balanced budget by the end of June.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s face it. We\u2019re at the 25-yard line. This is still early on in the budget process. We have a long way to go,\u201d Lee said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we need is less than 5% of savings.
