A Brooklyn mother said her new apartment in East New York is in desperate need of repairs \u2013 but building management is ignoring her cry for help. <\/p>\n
Cheyanne Babb-Jackson was supposed to move in on Friday, but said, at this point, she\u2019d rather move on. <\/p>\n
\u201cIf this is how the building is, I don\u2019t even think I want to be in this building,\u201d said Babb-Jackson. <\/p>\n
She told News 12 there was no way she could bring her 2-year-old son into the apartment building located on East New York Avenue. <\/p>\n
There was spotting and staining on the floorboards, one corner of a bedroom wall was crumbling and the ceiling was leaking. <\/p>\n
\u201cAs soon as I walked in, I saw a puddle on the floor, and it was just the smell of mold and mildew,\u201d said Babb-Jackson. <\/p>\n
She said she viewed the apartment twice before, and everything was fine \u2013 but then Babb-Jackson picked up her new keys on Wednesday from the management group, Reside New York. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s not like they didn\u2019t know we were coming,\u201d said Babb-Jackson. <\/p>\n
The paraeducator said she has been living in a shelter for nine months, received a voucher from Housing Connect, and got the new apartment through the housing lottery. <\/p>\n
\u201cI was ready to cook Easter dinner for my family in our new apartment,\u201d said Babb-Jackson. <\/p>\n
News 12 reached out to Reside New York on Friday for comment, but received an automated message that the office was closed for another week due to the Jewish holiday. <\/p>\n
\u201cNow we just have to sit in the shelter waiting because they don\u2019t come back until [April] 10,\u201d said Babb-Jackson. <\/p>\n
Babb-Jackson said her messages to management have gone unanswered. <\/p>\n
While News 12 was in the apartment, a maintenance worker showed up. He couldn\u2019t tell how long the repairs would take or if a temporary apartment was available. <\/p>\n
