The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) ruled on Wednesday that Amazon must negotiate with a labor union representing some 5,000 workers at a \u200bcompany warehouse on Staten Island.<\/p>\n
This ruling implies the company has to meet with representatives of the Amazon Labor Union, which formed in 2022 and has been seeking to negotiate \u200bwith Amazon over pay, working conditions and other matters.<\/p>\n
The union had initially formed independently, but it later aligned itself with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. The NLRB said in its ruling that \u200bAmazon \u201chas engaged in unfair labor practices\u201d by refusing to bargain with the \u200blabor group or to recognize its legitimacy.<\/p>\n
The board refuted Amazon\u2019s claim that the Amazon Labor Union was not the exclusive representative of employees at the facility, and that it was not obligated to engage in bargaining. Amazon said the NLRB wrongly certified the union election in March 2022, which it said was improperly influenced by both NLRB and ALU representatives.<\/p>\n Amazon has long resisted organized labor, saying workers are best served \u200bby negotiating directly with the company.<\/p>\n \u201cRepresentatives of the NLRB improperly influenced this election,\u201d the company said \u200cin \u2060a statement, suggesting it planned to appeal. \u201cWe\u2019re confident an unbiased court will overturn the original certification, and we look forward to the opportunity for our team to fairly voice their opinions.\u201d An appeal would most likely preclude Amazon from having to \u200bcomply with the \u2060NLRB\u2019s order while it makes its way through the courts.<\/p>\n
