NEW YORK – Citi Field might not be exactly in Brendan McSorley’s old backyard, but it’s close to home. That made his game-tying goal in stoppage time a tad sweeter Saturday against New York City FC.<\/p>\n
McSorley, who subbed in late in the 80th minute,\u00a0 scored in the sixth minute of second-half stoppage time to rally St. Louis City to a 1-1 draw with NYCFC.<\/p>\n
“I’m from New Jersey; this is one of the closest games that a lot of my family and friends could come to,” McSorley said. “I mean, they’ve been so supportive of me, just to be able to give them that goal was special. And hopefully I’m able to hang out with them tonight as well.”<\/p>\n
Neither team found the net until Hannes Wolf took a pass from Maxi Moralez six minutes into the second half and scored his second goal of the season to give NYCFC (3-1-2) the lead. Moralez and the New England Revolution’s Luca Langoni lead the league with five assists.<\/p>\n
That was it until McSorley got some help from defender Lukas MacNaughton and Conrad Wallem to score his first goal this season and his third in 14 appearances with two starts for St. Louis City (1-3-2).\u00a0<\/p>\n
McSorley subbed in for Simon Becher in the 80th minute before delivering the equalizer in St. Louis City’s first trip to the Big Apple. MacNaughton earned his first assist in his 63rd career appearance. Wallem notched his first after tallying four as a rookie last season.<\/p>\n
“We all know what he is capable of,” STL City coach Yoann Damet said of McSorley. “So, we had a plan going into the second half. Of course, the plan changed when we conceded that goal. I thought the subs did a brilliant job tonight for us, all of them. So, it was great to get Brendan at the end of it, and I hope this is going to give him a lot of confidence for the season. \u00a0<\/p>\n
Goalie Roman\u00a0Burki had six saves for St. Louis City.\u00a0Burki had his first shutout in a 2-0 victory over visiting\u00a0NYCFC in March of 2024 in the only other meeting between the clubs.<\/p>\n
Matt Freese finished with two saves for NYCFC.<\/p>\n
St. Louis City scored three unanswered goals to beat the New England Revolution 3-1 last time out for the club’s first victory of the campaign.<\/p>\n
“I don’t think it’s going to flip the season; I think it’s just part of the process,”\u00a0Damet said. “Of course, you want to build on moments. I think this is a very good moment to build on in terms of getting a point on the road, especially in the fashion we did today, so it’s good.<\/p>\n
“Really pleased for the guys again, the commitment tonight of the group, the mindset to keep pushing, and to go earn that point on the road was massive.<\/p>\n
