LOUIS, Mo. – Two big innings helped the No. 14 Washington University in St. Louis baseball team to a dominating 23-3 win over the New York University Violets in seven innings. The Bears get their 20th win of the season and improve to 20-6 overall and 4-3 in the UAA. NYU falls to 7-10 overall and 2-5 in the UAA.

The Violets got things started in the top of the first with back-to-back singles before a sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third. A wild pitch later, NYU scored to take a 1-0 lead.

First-year Chance Cromer led off the bottom of the first with a four-pitch walk before senior Shane Pellegrino was hit by a pitch. Sophomore Ryan Soong then loaded the bases with a near-perfect sacrifice bunt attempt for a hit down the left foul line toward third. Sophomore Cooper Greene walked in a run on four pitches to tie the game at 1-1.

With one out, first-year Jacob Sitte hit a single through the left side that scored Pellegrino from third and Soong from second, putting the Bears ahead 3-1. On the first pitch to sophomore Kevin Stephens, WashU executed a double steal that once again put runners on second and third. Stephens then hit a deep sacrifice fly to center that scored the fourth WashU run of the inning, 4-1.

Graduate student Josh Erpenbeck was hit by a pitch and sophomore Tyler Phillips walked to load the bases. After a pitching change, Cromer came up to bat for the second time in the inning and walked in the fifth WashU run of the game. Pellegrino was next and hit the second pitch he saw over the third baseman’s head into left field, scoring both Erpenbeck from third and Phillips from second as the Bears took a 7-1 lead.

Greene led off the bottom of the second with a single to the shortstop before a one-out walk by Witte put runners on first and second. A double steal led to Greene scoring on a wild pitch as WashU took an 8-1 lead. Stephens then hit a deep ball down the right field line on a sacrifice fly that brought in Witte, put the Bears up 9-1, and forced another NYU pitching change.

NYU got one run back in the top of the third. They led off with a hit batter who then reached third on a single to right-center. He eventually scored on a sacrifice fly to right field, trimming the WashU lead down to 9-2.

The Violets gathered one more run in the top of the fifth with a solo home run to right field by CJ Frachini.

Leading 9-3 going into the bottom of the fifth, Pellegrino hit a ball right on the right-field line that went deep into the left-field corner as he reached second without a throw. After Pellegrino took third on a wild pitch, Soong followed with a ball that went off the wall in right field as Pellegrino scored. After Soong stole third, Greene hit the third double in a row for WashU that brought in Soong and put the Bears up 11-3.

In the bottom of the sixth, WashU led off with two walks by Erpenbeck and first-year Eli Sitzer on eight straight balls, forcing a Violets pitching change. After a wild pitch, the Bears had runners on second and third. Cromer then hit a triple down the right-field line, scoring both runners and putting WashU ahead, 13-3. Soong backed that up with his third hit of the game, a double down the right-field line that scored Cromer as the Bears went up by 11, 14-3.

After Greene reached on a fielding error and Equale walked, Witte hit a triple to right field that bounced over a diving right fielder, scoring all three runs and putting WashU up 17-3. With two outs, first-year Kanten Smith pinch hit and collected a double in his first collegiate at-bat while also bringing in a run as WashU led 18-3. Back-to-back-to-back-to-back walks added two more to the Bears’ run total, 20-3, while leaving the bases loaded.

Another wild pitch by NYU scored the 10th WashU run of the inning. Senior Connor Lindsey was then hit by a pitch before Equale walked on five pitches, putting the Bears up 22-3. Witte was then hit by a pitch to bring in the 12th run of the inning for WashU, 23-3.

The Violets made use of a WashU pitching change and scored two runs in the top of the seventh, but they could not overcome the Bears’ lead as WashU claimed the run-rule win, 23-5.

Graduate student Chase Brickley (7-1) picked up the win, pitching the first 6.0 innings and striking out three.

Both Soong and Witte finished with three hits. Witte also tallied six RBIs while Soong had the team-high four runs scored. In total, 10 different WashU players scored at least one run. The Bears had two triples and five doubles.

WashU will wrap up the weekend on Sunday, April 5, with an 11 a.m. start time against the Violets.

——-

Elevating scholar-champions requires resources beyond the institutional budget.
