I say attraction and not ride because this is one of the areas of the theme park that doesn’t involve an amusement park ride. It’s a hands-on building experience centered around the Ferrari brand.

My family and I were among a group of guests who received early access to the Lego Ferrari building the night before it opened to the public. Full disclosure: Legoland New York paid for our park tickets and a one-night stay at the Legoland Hotel. However, the opinions I’m expressing in this review are my honest thoughts, including some criticism.

Once you’ve built your Ferrari red-and-black Lego car, it’s time to send it down the race ramp.

What Are the Four Zones of Lego Ferrari Build & Race?

The indoor attraction has four zones, all of which you can see in one eyeful: the garage, build and test, the racetrack, and a Duplo area for younger children.

The garage zone welcomes you to the space and features a true-to-size Ferrari convertible made from Lego bricks. Kids and parents can climb inside and get behind the wheel for a photo-op.

Then it’s on to the next zone: build and test. Bins that are low enough for little ones to reach are filled with red and black Lego bricks and wheelbases. Kids can dig in and build race cars that are as basic or creative as they want. (Like the many other building centers scattered across the theme park, the pieces are not for keeps and need to be returned so other kids can enjoy them.)

After children have built their cars, there are multiple ramps and a small downhill racetrack where kids can race each other. This naturally gets a bit chaotic, so plan to keep an eye on your little ones. Speaking of which, the Duplo corner is a great spot for toddlers to build and race, sans choking hazards.

The digital interactions at Ferrari Build & Race are not as engaging as the hands-on fun.

Are There Any Areas Families Should Skip?

The back wall of the space is taken up by a big screen where kids can scan their physical Lego cars and race them digitally. I found this area lackluster. There’s space for six people to participate at a time. Each race takes about two minutes, and there’s a three-minute prep period beforehand. If there are crowds, you might be waiting quite a while for an underwhelming experience. It’s a cool concept for kids to see the cars they built on the big screen, but the execution is lacking. Case in point: I dropped my Lego car right before I was supposed to scan it in, and two wheels fell off. With the race about to start, I went ahead and scanned my sad little junker to see what would happen. Onscreen, my two-wheeled jalopy made the same jaunty movements as its four-wheeled competitors, while the other racers and I pushed a single button repeatedly to get our cars to move…slowly…around the digital track.

My kids checked out this part of the space, quickly lost interest, and went back to building and racing with their hands.

Tips on Beating the Crowds

For the best chance at beating the crowds, arrive when the park opens and make a beeline for the Ferrari building: Go straight into the park and then veer left (don’t head down the hill and to the right toward Miniland). Walk past the Duplo train ride, and the Ferrari building is on your right, across from the Lego Factory Adventure building.

Just like any big attraction, Legoland New York is typically less crowded on weekdays when school is in session. And, even though it’s great to visit on a perfect-weather day, you’ll enjoy a calmer experience if the weather is a bit chilly or rainy. If the weather really puts a damper on the day, the resort activates its Guest Experience Promise, which allows you to reuse your tickets for another visit within one calendar year.

If you’re anxious to check out Ferrari Race & Build, make it your first stop!

Is the new Lego Ferrari Attraction Worth the Trip?

The new Ferrari area is a fun, interactive addition to the park, but I wouldn’t make the trek specifically for this one attraction. If you have a little one who’s obsessed with cars, it’s probably worth it. Same thing if a member of your family loves the Ferrari brand.

Speaking of which, my husband and I like to gently remind our children that most brands exist to separate people from their money—and they like to hook kids at a young age. There’s a reason groups like Common Sense Media now rate movies, books, and video games for consumerism in addition to factors like violence and language. It helps parents make thoughtful decisions.

Those familiar with the Lego story know the company was on the brink of financial disaster about 20 years ago. One of the moves that saved it was the decision to partner with brands like Disney, Harry Potter, and now Ferrari. As the mom of two Lego lovers, I’m glad the company is thriving. But parents should know a trip to Legoland, including the new Ferrari attraction, opens up the consumerism floodgates. Make sure you and your kids are wearing your (Lego-branded?) life jackets.

Gift shops abound. Parking costs $35 (or $55 for premium spots). A bottle of water can cost more than $5, which is especially onerous for families, given that the local tap water contains excessive levels of chemical contaminants. We found that out after reading a long, complicated notice near one of the water taps. These notices are posted throughout the park and hotel, but they’re easy to miss if you’re busy wrangling children.

Despite all of that, my family and I thoroughly enjoyed our day at the theme park. Since it’s built on a hillside in a quiet corner of the Hudson Valley, it feels open and spacious, making it a nice escape. There’s plenty to do, including many rides the whole family can enjoy together, but the number of activities isn’t overwhelming.

Legoland New York is best for ages 3-12. It can also be fun for toddlers or older kids, but be advised that this is not a place for thrill-seekers. The one big-kid roller coaster is quite tame, and so are the other rides. It’s a great first theme park experience for younger kids.

On a day that’s not too crowded, it’s possible to experience just about everything, from the rides (my son’s favorite is Rogue Riders, on the water) to the 4-D movies to the many hands-on building zones. Add in dozens of impressive Lego builds (Miniland features all five boroughs of NYC), some overpriced but decent theme park food, and a staff that’s mostly friendly and welcoming, and it can be a truly memorable family outing.

It’s been a few days since we returned to Brooklyn. Our 4-year-old daughter is still sighing longingly, expressing her desire to live at Legoland permanently “with the baby dragon” (by which she means the mini dragon rollercoaster). I’d say that’s a sign of a successful trip.

All photos by the author

My family and I recently had the chance to test out Lego Ferrari Build & Race, the newest…

[6
9,11,10
0":"post-186290","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-new-york","8":"tag-new-york","9":"tag-new-york-headlines","10":"tag-new-york-news
["GET
