NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) \u2014 Several streets across all five boroughs will go car\u2011free for Earth Day as the city hosts events promoting climate awareness, sustainability and alternative transportation.<\/p>\n
The annual Car\u2011Free Earth Day event, organized by the NYC Department of Transportation, will turn select streets into pedestrian\u2011 and cyclist\u2011only zones. The event will be hosted on Saturday, April 25, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.<\/p>\n
The day features environmental programming, public art, music and activities led by city agencies and community groups.<\/p>\n
\u201cCar\u2011Free Earth Day is a reminder that we only have one planet\u2014and that our streets play a critical role in our fight against climate change,\u201d NYC DOT Commissioner Mike Flynn said.<\/p>\n
Citi Bike will offer unlimited 30\u2011minute rides on classic bikes for 24 hours on Car\u2011Free Earth Day, according to the NYC DOT.<\/p>\n
\u201cTransportation is the second biggest source of carbon emissions in New York City,\u201d the agency said, encouraging New Yorkers to explore the car\u2011free routes and enjoy the programming offered throughout the day.<\/p>\n
