The latest legislation made it through the Assembly last month and is now in the hands of the Senate\u2019s Transportation Committee.<\/p>\n<p>The bedbug legislation is now being considered by the state Senate\u2019s Transportation Committee. ondreicka \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>While the apple seed-sized insects aren\u2019t believed to cause disease, bedbugs feed off human blood and can cause red, itchy welts, according to the Mayo Clinic.<\/p>\n<p>The last reported <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2018\/09\/25\/mta-pulls-some-buses-out-of-service-over-bed-bug-fears\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MTA infestation happened in 2018,<\/a> when the transit authority had to take a half-dozen buses out of service in Manhattan.<\/p>\n<p>Though a passenger reportedly found the bugs crawling on a seat, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2018\/09\/25\/mta-idles-a-half-dozen-buses-over-possible-infestation-but-finds-no-bedbugs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">an MTA investigation found no such critter.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In 2020, a Queens control tower was evacuated and fumigated after workers discovered bed bugs, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/01\/22\/beg-bugs-wreak-havoc-on-rush-hour-subway-commute-in-queens\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">causing rush hour subway delays.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The city health department\u2019s latest bedbug figures are from 2014 \u2013 when approximately 327,000 cases of bed bugs were reported citywide, including 125,000 cases in Brooklyn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is extremely important for residents of New York City and nearby suburbs, who worry \u2013 for good reason, because bed bugs are difficult to eradicate once they have taken hold \u2013 about encountering bed bugs when they use public transportation,\u201d Colton added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"They\u2019re itching for the truth.
