{"id":187264,"date":"2026-04-06T16:18:42","date_gmt":"2026-04-06T16:18:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/187264\/"},"modified":"2026-04-06T16:18:42","modified_gmt":"2026-04-06T16:18:42","slug":"tree-planting-program-sprouts-in-brooklyn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/187264\/","title":{"rendered":"Tree Planting Program Sprouts in Brooklyn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thanks to a grant from the Department of Environmental Conservation, the nonprofit Big Reuse will plant more than 200 trees in Cypress Hills and the Brooklyn Navy Yard area over the next two years. <\/p>\n<p>Environmental nonprofit <a href=\"https:\/\/bigreuse.org\/?srsltid=AfmBOoroqR-vBS1jbMIiGDdXeCHRoaw6z8Iiasbp8h-ioJv-r3S7jogY\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Big Reuse<\/a> planted the first trees as part of their planting season on Wednesday, part of a multiyear program that will bring over 200 tress to various neighborhoods in Brooklyn.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to a grant from the Department of Environmental Conservation, the organization will be planting a total of 235 new trees in disadvantaged communities from now until spring 2027, nonprofit executives said.<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday&#8217;s tree planting event took place at the Brooklyn Navy Yard area with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpack.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cumberland Packing Corporation<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/council.nyc.gov\/district-33\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">City Council Member Lincoln Restler<\/a>.\u00a0Refreshments were provided courtesy of local businesses <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brooklynroasting.com\/?gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=21183101023&amp;gbraid=0AAAAAB8D7Wb76ZcTHYaXHjEPdfnZAnydX&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjws83OBhD4ARIsACblj1-aZG7zWV3p7Op_la6VmPf3lm99EaylSWjVp3adOTt_RlakYZvohXAaAkKMEALw_wcB\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Brooklyn Roasting Company<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shewolfbakery.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">She Wolf Bakery<\/a>. Photo: Supplied\/Big Reuse&#13;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is our backyard,\u201d said Cumberland employee Ana Zaldarriaga, who secured parking for the truck transporting the 400 lb pin oak trees, water supply, compost, mycelium and tools.<\/p>\n<p>The tree planting team took volunteers step-by-step through the process of loosening existing soil in tree beds, breaking up mycelium, mixing in compost, digging just the right amount into the tree bed, and finishing it off with a layer of mulch.
