NEW YORK – NYC Parks and the mayor have decided that permit applications for “special events” may be denied the week of the upcoming FIFA World Cup<\/a>.<\/p>\n Emergency rule for special events this summer <\/p>\n What we know:<\/p>\n New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani signed an emergency order<\/a> to enact the decision.<\/p>\n The decision was reportedly made to ensure “efficient deployment” of police resources; members of the NYPD must be on site for “large-scale special events.”<\/p>\n Official events associated with the FIFA World Cup will require “significant realignment” of city personnel. As a result, permit applications for certain events may be denied.<\/p>\n The U.S. Men\u2019s National Soccer Team is in Atlanta preparing for the FIFA World Cup, with players competing for limited roster spots. A total of 27 players have been called into camp, with upcoming matches against Belgium and Portugal serving as key tests ahead of the final roster announcement. Players say the focus is on teamwork, effort and earning their place as they prepare for the biggest stage in soccer \u2014 with the World Cup final set to take place in the New York area this summer.<\/p>\n The qualifiers behind a potential permit denial include:<\/p>\n An event that takes place between June 11 and July 19An event that was not held in 2025An event that is not a demonstrationAn event that NYC Parks and the NYPD determine they cannot ensure public safety and welfare (due to lack of resources) Smaller events that do not require a police presence will not be affected by this emergency order.<\/p>\n What they’re saying:<\/p>\n NYC Parks Press Officer Greg McQueen sent the following statement to FOX 5 NY:<\/p>\n “Please note that the emergency rule doesn’t mean that all permits will be denied during the FIFA period.
